A friend of mine has a manual cutout (obviously the same except you have to crawl under the car), and it sounds NASTY when it is open.

As for brands and stuff, perhaps one of the other guys can help you out.

What is a cutout? Is it one of those things on the exhaust that you can have it going through it or just open it up?

Yes. If you are curious as to what it would sound like, disconnect your downpipe from the cat. I did this recently because I'm a closet ricer (and was curious), and it sounded absolutely terrible. I have no idea how my car can sound so shitty compared to my friend's WRX. I put the bolts back in about 20 minutes later.

Is there much of a HP increase??? Because I'm getting an Evo III manifold, and a 3" downpipe, and already have a 2" or 2 1/2" Apexi N1 Catback, and an "aftermarket" cat. So I'd like it to be as unrestricted as possible. Then a little off topic, but it would be a waste to start a new one...How long should it take me (novice mechanically) and a friend (built his exhaust system on his '86 Chevy 3/4 ton) to put in the Evo III manifold and the downpipe??? Again TIA.

it's all bolt on. the hardest part will be getting the old bolts off probably. just spray them down with wd40 or an equivelant and go look at your pretty parts and figure out how they go on. once you're done doing that, go back and take it all apart. quick and easy.

I hope your apex is 3" and that was just a typo. plus the DP will get rid of your "aftermarket" cat. it'll be a little louder, but it's worth it. Good luck, hope you enjoy.

The downpipe gets rid of the cat??? Now I don't have to go in for emisions ever, except if a cop notices it missing, so I dunno about that. As for the N1, i'm 95% sure it's not 3", probably 2 1/2".
Taking the bolts off was what I figured would be the toughest part, and I'm deadly afraid of busting off one of the studs, I've done that before on my dirt bike and I thought that I'd learned my lesson.

if it's an N1 downpipe, and N1 exhaust, for a turbo, then it's 3". and thats a good thing, so don't worry. also, if the DP is an N1, it removes the cat. If you have emissions just save the stock stuff for inspections. and a cop shouldn't pull you over, it won't be that loud, and if it is get the silencer.

Just make sure to spray down the bolts before you go tryin to twist them off. and you'll be fine. just make sure you're on it nice and tight.

Alrighty...Thank you very much for all the advice.

The N1 is 3inch (they dont sell anything smaller for the turbo) and the downpipe does eliminate the cat - so just find a mechanic buddy and slip him 40 bux to pass your car, or just do what import2nr suggested.

The sound is alot better, it doesnt sound like a ricer its pretty much the ideal sound for an import. I love it -

if you do have problems with the studs, just heat them up with a oxy-acetylene torch, just 2 flats will make it tons easier. Mine were a b*tch to get out with wd40 so i borred my friends torch...much easier.

as for the exhaust, i could not find any n1's that were less than 3" which is what i have on my car and i love it. i live in a town with probably 50 cops to patrol a boring suburb, and i have never been pulled over from my exhaust. i was accused, however, of dui at least 40 or so times. It's my tires i swear. :P
