Check trans light blinking, alternator gauge

I have 95.5 rodeo/passport with 126Kmiles. A couple of weeks ago while driving the engine just died and the check transmission light came on and started flashing. I also noticed the voltage gauge was pegged at 16.
The engine would not turn over for about 10 minutes and when it did I could not go any faster than 10 miles per. I shut the truck off and waited for about 20 min and it started fine like nothing happened. Now today Iam on my way to big bear and the check trans light comes on and the power dies but quickly recovers? Any Ideas on what causes this type of action. Any help will be greatly appreciated

In case anyone ever experiences this type of Issue, check the alternator.
Turns out a faulty alternator was the cause of these strange actions.
Glad I was able to resolve this but 149.99 for the alternator plus a 75.00 core was steep.
