I just rigged up a system in my car... a kicker in a tube and a 300watt Jenson amp bridged. This stuff is on loan from a friend but when I buy my own stuff what would you guys suggest... I don't want two 12s because I don't want everything rattling and my rear-veiw falling down, it's a Camaro so from the outside it shouldn't sound some rattling Civic, it should be refined. The one 12 hits hard on the inside but isn't too much... should I stay with it or get two 10s intead... I think two 10s move more air than one 12.

I'd go with the one 12"... I had a 10" MTX thunderform in my 93 Z and it was enough bass that the rear view mirror, and license plate would shake. One 12 wouldn't take up as much room as the two 10's.

There are many things to consider when picking subs. The first and most important is what type of music do you listen to? Two tens will have alot of punch, but will not go as low as a 12. How much power are you going to provide the sub? What type of enclosure? Sealed or ported? A single 12 with 300 watts will move as much air as 2 10's with 150 watts each. Sealed boxes give the most accurate reproduction of the music. Ported boxes are more sensitive but you sacrifice sound quality. Bandpass boxes are a mix of the two. If you listen to mostly rock, go with the sealed...if you prefer cRAP go with ported. I would personly go with a single 12 in a sealed enclosure.

Thanks... these are the things I wanted to know. Figure I will use about the same wattage going to either two 10s or the one 12. I thought the 10s moved more air because surface area, pi*5-squared *2 = 157 for 2 10s, pi*6-squared = 113. But I could be wrong, I don't know about subs.
But I have also heard that smaller subs give cleaner hits??? So what are the advantages of bigger subs, they can hit lower freq?

Ok man. I would suggest 2 Infinity Reference (or if you can spend a litle bit more, get he Kappas) 12s. Before my current 4 12 system, I had 2 Infinity reference subs in my car and they were VERY good for a reasonable amount (125 for a pair). They give the crisp bass you are looking for, but that are not obnoxiously loud. Its more of a very refined, punchy bass instead of the head shaking shit. Just a suggestion.

i thought it was rockford fosgate not rockford fallgate, but whatever, i had 1 infinity 10 in my wrangler (space restrictions) and it wasnt bad at all, it came powered with enough thump so you could hear it from the outside, didnt weigh very much and only cost $100....just my 2 cents

just a quick note.. towdad. please check the dates on the previous post before you post in a thread. we try not to bring back old threads. in this case we brought back a 10 month old thread, it's been dead almost as long as i have been here. it's not that huge of a deal, but it clutters up the front page and some of the regular members get irritated..
