does anyone know how hard it is to do a do it yourself strut job on the golfs.

its not that bad at all. the rears are really easy, no spring compressors needed. the fronts springs compressors are recommended. if you dont have air tools, you will need to make a specail tool for the strut mount nuts. basically, you have to hold the strut rod still while you loosen the nut. the easiest way to do this is to just grind down two sides of a socket, should be like 21/22mm or 15/16ths" so that you can hold it with a pair of channel locks. then get your allen key/socket and stick it in the hole in the middle of the socket. that way the strut rod wont spin when you loosen the nut. thats the most difficult part. on the rear, just use a 6mm open end wrench to hot the strut rod still. the bottom bolts on the front are use for alignment so mark where the bolts are before you loosen them (2 17mm head bolts per side). the rears you can just pull off. 15mm heads IIRC. good luck

i was a bit intimidated,peeps been tellin me they not nice if you try to take them off without using compressors.
