Theft deterrent module

I thought I had my "lockout" problem solved. Worked for awhile.
Any way, the Buick service manager told me that the first time you insert the key with a new TDM it will read the circuit as open, and no key chip will be needed to start the car from then on. I have only to clip the wires to make sure that the circuit IS open.
My question is about changing the theft deterrent module. Does the battery need to be unhooked first? Also, is there anything unusual about detaching, and plugging the new TDM back in.
