It appears that 1st gear is Gone for the most part. It seems like I'm starting from 2nd geat, so takes a long time to get up to speed. Sometimes, I'll just put it in Low, and then shift to Drive, in order to get some pickup from a standing start. Also, the O/D off light blinks on the dash board...... I'm hoping this isn't a total rebuid transmission situation.
any suggestions? Rick

1. check and fill transmission fluid level
2. get a new tranny (for less than 2K)
3. traid-in for another car (hopefully another corolla) you'll probably get at least 2k for it

Hello, I am new to this forum so I don't know how old this post is but I may have an idea as to your problem. I have a 1987 Camry and had the exact same problem. It ended up being the transmisson drive selenoids. It was an easy fix and not to expensive. Drain you tranny pan and remove it. The selenoids were very easy to get at. There are 2 of them. They look like small canisters. They will just pop in and out and have 1 wire connected to them. Disconnect the wire, pop out selenoid, pop in new ones, connect wire, replace pan and gasket and add fluid. The selenoids usually cost about $70 a piece but if you have a parts connection you can get them at half the price. A tranny shop wanted $900 to do mine and I did it myself for about $80. Hope this helps.
