does your max drift left/right ???

yea i'm tryin to figure out if anybody has the same problem as me.when i'm on the highway i have trouble stabilizing the car.it either goes left or right.i got an alignment twice just to make sure and it didn't go away.tire pressure is at 32,and i got the stock shock on at 60000 miles on the meter.do i need new shocks????????????????????:smoka: :smoka: :smoka: :smoka: :smoka: :smoka: :smoka: :smoka: :smoka: :smoka: :smoka: :smoka:

There was an old practice alot of the tire shops used to do but don't do so much nowadays called "trueing". It's where they can shave the tire tread to make the tire closer to round. You may consider that. And since you've had an alignment done 2x I suggest you also check to see if you don't have a sticking caliper. You can do so by feeling the wheels after a drive. If one feels hotter than the others then that may be your culprit.

Are you on stock springs or lowering springs? If your on stock springs tell the alignment shop to pull as much EVEN negative camber as possible. By EVEN I mean the same on both sides. Some shops like to set up camber at 0 to -.5 degrees. Thats factory specs. If you run a little more camber, about -.8 degrees your drifting will stop. Your turns will fell a bit tighter too.

Also what kind of tire are you running? A more agressive tire will track better. If you have a soft crusing tire on there you will have more of that floaty feel.

yea i got stock springs with 65000 miles.i was considering a new suspension anyways. i got the yokohamas H4"s , there kinda loud on the highway,but i will look into that camber as soon as i get a chance.i was thinking about taking it to a nissan dealership for that since they would know best.:ylsuper :ylsuper :ylsuper :ylsuper :ylsuper :ylsuper :stormzap:

My Maxima was having the same problem, I had the tires changed once, rotated twice, and realigned once, and nohting seemed to help. Finally I took it to a huy who specializes in Maximas, and he first said he thought that it was the steering column, but it turned out to be some loose bolts on the camber. Cost me $90 to have repaired.

Look, this seems to be a very common problem. The woman who owned the car before me got new tires, several alignments, had it in to the dealership, etc and never found the problem. She disclosed it when she sold it to me. The car pulled right especially when pulling out from a stop, or when braking. I took it to a specialist guy in this area who is known for honesty. He had the car for 3 days. First he thought it was the rack, and that it needed to be replaced for about $800. However he continued testing. He found after three days of testing that bolts on the rack were loose and causing the problem. The repair was $90, 5 months ago and I haven't had a single problem since. Make sure you don't get fleeced.

i had my car run with 80k and looks like it's time to replace the shock. ANY suggestions i can get a good replacement and is that easy to install. just wanna save some money spent in Dealer chop shop.

The right/left drift issue that everyone seems to be facing is due to caster differences between the left and right side. Since our 5th gens don't have an adjustment for caster it can't be fixed without elongating the holes at the bottom of the struts to be able to make the adjustment. I had the same problem with my car until I had the holes elongated to facilitate caster adjustment. The cars now rides perfect.

drove from Ft.Lauderdale FL to Hot Springs Ark over the Christmas holiday and didn't notice any drift problem like the one you're describing. My 03 Max ran perfectly all the way up and back. Except for an alan wrench that gave me a flat coming through Pensecola ( damn I hate those tiny donut tires they give you!) Anyways, plugged it myself and was good to go in no time. I was surprised I got 37.6 miles to the gallon with the cruise set on 60 for about 230 miles! However my average was around 28mpg which still isn't too bad since I was doing 85-90 the majority of the trip.

for a while my max was doing the same pulling to the right. an alignment was not helping had 3 with no sucess. lowered the car with new shocks and springs, still didnt help, put on new tires ( radial pull) still didnt help. then later on I had something done called a toe in. i believe that is what helped, i dont notice a thing.

I have this same F-n problem on my 98 Max SE, and it only has 28,000 miles! What a stupid set of problems these cars have. I mean who designs a car and puts into production a car that CLEARLY pulls to the right? Nissan's quality control in the late 90's definately leaves something to be desired, this problem is simply unacceptable. I was going to get mine aligned tomorrow but now I gotta call around to 600 places to find someone who is familiar with this and can fix it efectively, before I waste $70 on a alignment the car really doesn't need. Uuhhhgh! I am used to Hondas, drive straight as an arrow and never have these quirky,nettlesome problems.

Heh, I'd rather keep watch on my tire pressure with the max than have to get out and push up to speed with a honda.

My 2003 Accord V6 will smoke my 98 Maxima any given day of the week.

Well of course a 2003 Accord will beat a 98 Max! But I garuntee my 2003 Max will smoke your 2003 Accord! ( I've already put that one to the test!) Pick on someone your own size! :cool: lol

Never ending story. Just trying to avoid car payments. 96 Maxima with a drift to the left. Tried quite a bit. Ride was bumpy with wonderful roads in our city, had to do suspension work. New control arm (driver's side) ball joints, linkages etc. Replaced struts and driver's side was not tight enough? Banged when I drove it. Replaced the strut thought it was defective... still banging. Someone told me to throw a couple of washers between strut mount and nut. Seemed to tighten suspension but car pulls to the left. Maybe not the best choice of remedy but needed the vehicle. Don't know if I've created more problems for myself. Had three alignments, camber kit.

Any recommendations would be great, I only threw the washers on after spending so much cash on the car for various problems. Thanks for any replies.
