Hey whats up guys my car died on me yesterday. I believe its the alternator I just baught a new battery. I must mention that once it died on me I noticed the belt was all halfway off the pulley . So my question is this. Could the belt being off like that damage the alternator? Do I have to replace it. I replaced the alternator with a spare but I think that alternator was bad. Once I put the other alternator on lastnight, I notice after a few seconds smoke started coming out of where the alternator is. I swear to god it looks like the belt is smoking. So my question is this.....What would make the alternator or the alternator belt smoke like that?

Take the alternator to autozone to get it tested, but i don't see how if it is bad it could make the belt smoke. Maybe if the alternator was smoking itself?

Yea It could have been the alternator. I'm just saying it looked like the belt was smoking. But I cant emplain how the belt could smoke itself either. I think it is the alternator. I will take it to autozone and have them check to see what they think.

Like he said, your alt. is probably locked up. Does it make any noise when it smokes?
