Cannot open liftgate

The handle on our 98 Silhouette liftgate is broken. How can I get the liftgate open? I tried to remove the handle but the Helm's manual states there are parts that need to be removed from the inside first. Since I cannot remove the trim panel w/o opening the liftgate, how do I get the liftgate open?

Well if you havent gotten it open yet...

You can force the upper section of the doorpanel open by pulling down on it. This however may ruin the doorpanel and may not if your careful. Once the upper section is folded down you will see 2 rods. Pull these rods to the center of the door and it will open. The other way is to reach in the keyhole and look for the tab that will also move these rods. Once you find the tab push up,down,left,right ( I foget) and the door will also open.
