1993 Accord transmission problems

Hey guys, first time posting on autoforums. I have a 1993 4 door EX Accord with about 140,000 miles on it. It is very hard to pull out of park as the release for it does not work. The switch connected to the brake is broken and the key does not release it as well. I just leave it in neutral and use my spare to lock/unlock so I don't hurt it too bad.

When I put it into d4 it only has the fourth gear. It will start out in fourth stay in it unless I put it into 1. 1 is the only other gear that works, putting it into 2 and d3 keeps it into 1 but going back up to d4 jumps it into fourth gear.

I took the car to AAMCO Transmissions and they said they would have to rebuild it for 1,500-2,500 $. Now I'm wondering, does anyone know if this is really the problem? Could it be the gear selector cable(some have said its this) that is broken/out of allignment? I really do not want to pay that much cash for a car that was bought for 2,500.

Oh and the odometer is broken as well. It is stopped right at 140,000 and the key in the "service checkup" hole did not fix it.

If anyone out there can help I greatly appreciate it, this is my first car and its giving me a huuge headache :(

Well, it sounds like you have an assortment of problems. I can only suggest a solution to one of them --- the issue of its being hard to get out of Park. That's the shifter cable. Needs replacing (bloody expensive, for a cable). Mine did the same. Maybe that'll fix your other shifting problems (but I'm a little skeptical).

Alternative - sell the thing while it's still running. I bought a '93 EX with 140,000 in January for $2800 and it doesn't have 1/4 the problems yours does.

Is your D4 indicator light on the dashboard always on? Is so, you need a TCM to fix the 4th gear stock problem. If your car runs great at high speed, your tranny is good and doesn't need rebuild.
