Alcad II question

Hi everybody!

I recently purchased Alcad II in a spray can- and I am VERY pleased with the finish it gives me. I had One major problem though- the chrome rubs off VERY easily.

Now, I'm thinking a problem could be that I used tamiya's black as a base color instead of a water based black like it tells you to. Would that make the difference?

Which Tamiya black did you use, the enamel, the acrylic or the lacquer?

"Back Alcad II with waterbase black paint basecoat"

I'm not sure what kind of paint tamiya is, now that you mention it... it's the stuff in the little spray cans.

The stuff in the spray cans is synthetic lacquer, Tamiya also makes acrylics and enamels in bottles.

If you want Alclad II chrome to stick, you have a few choices that work.

It will not stick to dried water based acrylics, or lacquers.

It will stick to dried black enamel.

It also will stick to wet enamel, and wet Tamiya TS spray.

I've heard it does not stick well to Alclad's own black base. Go figure.

I had similar results w/Alclad over Tamiya TS black...beautiful, but couldn't touch it. I tried it over freshly airbrushed Testors black enamel, and it's beautiful and permanent. Veyron has had permanent results spraying it over freshly sprayed TS black...just don't let it dry, the Alclad will not "bite" into the surface to make it permanent.

From what I understand. People back there Alclad using Testors Black enamel. Try that out colin.

Will do, Mike-o!

Thanks for all your help guys. I'm not an air-brusher, so i'll try some of the other meathods. If the wet TS black doesn't work, i'll try Testors.

Edit: I've gotten some requests for a picture of the rattle can, since they are apparently something more special than the bottles.

I took pics of my project RX-7 with the alcad can in the back for people who want to see it.

You are using material for Lexan designed to adhere to clear lexan then have a black acrylic overcoat placed on it. You need to get regular Alcald II paints where you place the black first and the Alclad second.

To clarify David's comment a little. RC cars made of Lexan are painted on the inside of the body. So, when the car gets bashed, the paint doesn't chip off. The Alclad is safely sandwiched between the Lexan and the black overcoat. In our hobby, we paint the outside of the body. The Alclad is on top where you can touch it. It's not surprising that the stuff made for Lexan rubs off when we use it.

Hey Colin. Try clear coating it, that might keep it from rubbing off.

Really? I heard that Alclad was supposed to be clear coated. I could be wrong.

Do not clearcoat Alclad Chrome. If you do, it will look like silver or chrome paint, losing most of the reflective qualities.

You may be confused w/Testors metalizers, they have a clear sealer. All clearcoats over any metalized finishes usually result in the surface looking like silver paint. I do not clearcoat any metallic finishes.
