I had my intake gaskets replaced at about 88,000 and the rotor and cap due to a major missing and back fire. the truck runs great now but I get a code P0430 repeated daily. It seems that the catalyst on Bank 2 is below tolerances. Can anyone tell me what to check next to keep the light off?

I had one of these codes come on a while back, the p0430 or the other code for the bank 1 side. I cant remember if it was bank 1 or bank 2. I think the technical term for those codes are Catalyst efficiency below threshhold. One of my catalytic converters had crapped out. I think youre probably going to need a new cat.

Thanks for the information, I have to ask a dumb question but how can a ceramic honey comb element wrapped in a steel shell go bad? My
BMW dealer tells me that 325i has 2 debonding cats.............similar issue with codes. I just don't understand the mechanics behind the problem. I have cut cats into before and cannot understand for the life of me how they can go bad............I'll take your recommendation and start replacing the obvious. Many thanks.

Well, a catalytic converters job is to cut down on harmful emissions in your exhaust gasses. Theres nothing mechanical about it. It's purely a chemical reaction. I'm not an expert on this but I think the byproduct of a properly functioning catalytic converter when it mixes with exhaust gasses is Oxygen and water. Hence the O2 sensors before and after your cats. These compare how well your cat is functioning. My guess would be that back when you had the missing and backfiring going on that you damaged one of the cats. Maybe from some unburned fuel getting into the cat and ruining it? I know when one of mine went bad, I had a similar problem with very bad misfiring and sputtering right before I started getting the codes.

Left and right sides are determined by standing at the rear of the vehicle looking forward.
Left would be considered the drivers side (here in the US)
