What is the difference between a vtec engine and a normal one? I saw a 98 civic with a vtec engine, it had 86k miles and looked to be in really good shape. It was also a manual and had a aftermarket head unit put in. The asking price was close to 7g. Is this a good deal or does 86k miles sound a bit high for 7g? Thanks for any responses

The difference between VTEC and NON-VTEC is that cars that have it generally have more high rpm power than the non-VTEC ones. That a pretty simple explanation of it. Go to www.howstuffworks.com for a detailed explanation of how VTEC works.
As far as your ??? about is 7g's too much. I think it is a little steep. I just bought a 2000 Civic EX 5spd. w/56000mi. for $9995. I would say shop around a little, you might find a better deal.
As a reference here some numbers for 96-00 Civics and 99-00 SI
Civic Coupe DX HX EX Si
Displacement 1590 1590 1590 1595
Horsepower @ RPM 106@6200 116@6300 127@6600 160@7600
Torque 103@4600 104@5400 107@5500 111@7000
Compression Ratio 9.4:1 9.4:1 9.6:1 10.2:1
Valve Train NON-VTEC VTEC-E VTEC DOHC VTEC

Maybe you should try reading through the FAQ, that's what it's there for, to prevent repeated questions. Read this
http://asia.vtec.net/spfeature/vtecimpl/vtec1.html
That will explain everything about VTEC for you, so then you'll know the difference between vtec and non vtec. :)
As for the car you're looking at, that's about an average price.

OMG. I read that FAQ. Almost put me to sleep. Much to detailed for me just getting started with all this craziness.
Can't wait until I understand it. :D

lol...kicker is sneaky
BTW: this one is great
Heres another website about VTEC.
http://www.leecao.com/honda/vtec/
I think we should have Schector explain to all of us how VTEC works. He's a Honda guru from what I understand through his PMs.

sohc nonvtec = bwaaaaaah
sohc vtec = bwaaaaaahBWAAH
dohc vtec = bwaaaaaaaahBWAAAAAAH!!
Now fit the lower/higher case letters to speed and sound, and that's what you got in the real world.
