Cheep?

What do you think would be the cheepest car to be a 10 to 12 second car? What would you pick, why? What would you do to it, why? How much would the car cost? How much would the upgrades cost?

to run 10's! the best choice if you have a low budget is to get a 5.0 mustang. gte one for under $4k and with a few things, youll be in the 10's. maybe $5k of mods will have you running 10's. i dont know much about domestics, but i think its a good guess. or if you have money... you can get ANY car into the 12's, and if you have a bit more, any car into the 10's.

IMO an LT1 Camaro. The 5.0 'stang is a good choice also.
1993-1997 Camaro Z28's can be had anywhere from $4k to $8k, depending on the mileage and the condition of the car.
I can hook you up with someone who has both a 5.0 'stang and an Z28, both of which kick some major ass on the drag strip. He can give you a more detailed explanation on how much it would cost to get the cars into the 10's.

No question, a Turbo Dodge or a Turbo Chrysler. Chances are that you won't pay more than $3,000 for a good condition one. Then, all you have to do is put about $1,200 in the car and you're easily in the 12s. I don't know of many cars that provide the speed these do for so little cash. In fact, I am flying out to Ohio to buy one with only 74,000 miles on it and it is in mint condition except for a dent in the driver’s side quarter panel. The guy only wants $600 for it. Then for around $1,200 I could be in the 12s. That is a mere $2,000 to run in the 12s and they will do it all day long without a complaint, they’re rock solid.

I can only really vouch for what I know, and that is the 5.0 foxbody Mustang. You can easily find a good condition one for less than $4000, if you want it for speed only, get the LX, but NOT the convertible. The LX is lighter than the GT, and is actually faster than the GT when stock because of the weight. A couple grand will get you into the 12's and 10's fairly easily. You could get a smaller engine car to do the same, but the higher revs would decrease the life of many parts of the engine, including requiring an engine overhaul a tad mroe often than you would need in a 302cid V8. You can get a 1988 (that's 16 years old) LX Mustang for cheap and the engine will still be a long ways from breaking down, they have nice strong engines.
I've never owned a Camaro before, but from what I've heard, they are about the same with Mustangs in terms of having a nice strong engine to work on. And aftermarket parts are easy to find and are also very cheap. They are also just about the easiest engines to work on.

Here's an article I found on DSM's and getting them into the 12's while nearly stock.
"how to run 12's on a close to stock 1g awd....

over the last couple of years, ive done nothing but read and talk to fellow dsmers and ive come to the conclusion that a few well chosen parts will put these (awd) cars into the 12 EASILY. i took the initiative and put my money where my mouth is. my part list is as follows. full 3" o2 eliminator exhaust (you can also drop the exhaust after the stock downpipe but its loud and your gonna buy exhaust anyway), k&n with no air can, MBC, taylor 8mm wires, bpr7es', 190 fuel pump ,afc (old or new style). i bought all this stuff USED off the trader for under $700. nothing is ported on my car so ill leave it up to you as an individual if you want to jump into the porting. this is a bare bones list to run 12s i think (safely). you might be able to pull it off with out an afc or fuel pump or plug wires but will you be driving home? buy some 114 race gas (make sure your not running a cat, leaded fuel will kill your cat sooner than later) crank the boost to 20 psi and voila!! hauling ass! of course all this is pointless if your car is in poor running condition. a basic tune up and compression test will give you the peace of mind to drive the shit out of the car. lower your tire pressure to 20psi in the front and 18psi in the rear. when your pre staged theres a trick you can do to help you shift smoothly. shift from 1st to 2nd to 3rd to 2nd to 1st a few times and it helps line up your synchros for some quick shifting. rev the motor to 5500 and dump the clutch and dont miss second!! that will set you up for a blazing run that will most likely net you that 12 sec pass. if you dont do it your first try dont give up!!! "feel" your way around your cars power band and try shifting at different rpm points. youll soon discover where your cars sweet spots are and youll have many a person scratching their heads as to why a basically stock awd just did the impossible. let your car cool down between runs as your stock intercooler will heat soak and you WILL lose timing, even with race gas. hot lapping the car is also detrimental to the stock clutch. cooling it down for 20-30 minutes between runs ensures optimal performance from your stock parts. hope this helps some of you to reach your goals wothout killing your wallet. Oh man, I don't think I can rev the engine to 5500rpm before releasing the clutch, I'd be too afraid to screw up my tranny... I'm a wussy, I know!

From my understanding though crysler, mitsu, dodge, ect. have junk tranys. Though I heard that there is ONE that is bullet.
I think that I found what I am looking for now.
86' vette: 3500
Chip: 2000
Cam: 350
K&N air filter:350
----------------
total: 6150
I know a friends of a friend who is running 11.5s with only this done to the the vette. He did not even have slicks just regular crappy street tires. Plus the car out-handles 911s! :naughty:

The A-604 was junk, and that was one tranny. The A-555 and A-568 from Chrysler were forged five speed manuals. They were designed by Chrysler and built by Getrag of Germany. Trust me, they hold up. Even the non-forged A-520 and A-525 and even the auto A-413 can take a good amount of power with very little modification.

I'll look into that -so anyway what do you think of the vette plan?

I could easily get an rx-7 in the 12's for under $2000 if you know what you're doing. That's including the price of the car.

Yah, too bad that bloak that tried to race me on the highway with a RX-7 didn't know your tricks... Too bad for him at least, lol.
He did have about 500 stickers on his car, you would have thought with so much stickercharging that it would have been flying.

Yah man, it was horrible, and after all the good things I've heard about the RX7, I thought he would give me a good run, but I pwned him, he slowly became a speck on my rear-view mirror, lol.
Perhaps if he had saved all his money from that big coffee can exhaust, the big useless wing, and the hundreds of stickers he had on it, perhaps he would have been able to afford some good engine mods that would have given him a better chance.

What kind of parts are you running on that RX-7 to get in such a low number range?
From my understanding those rx7s can get an arse load of hp but have practicaly no torque. As we all should know the torque is what get one from stoplight to stoplight.
