Fuel Gauge

Hey everyone. Been awhile since I have needed to post anything but as with all cars its not a matter of if, but when!!

I had my AC system checked to verify that my compressor was bad. As I feared I need a new compressor. However, the reason for my posting has to do with my fuel gauge. I have looked thru all the postings and do not see any additional info on fuel gauges. The only one I did see referred to the same problem I am having, which is a fuel gauge that goes from Full to Empty and back again.

Does anyone know if this could be related to a simple check on my A/C.

Thanks

Mine did that for a few days last December - I filled it up and it was on empty after about five minutes drive, and it bounced around for a couple of days but then straightened itself out. :screwy:
It's been OK since - so wait for a while, maybe it will go away on it's own. :)

This is usually the sending unit flaking out. Probably not related to your AC compressor. I had the same experience as dred98 back in December - at a fill it went all the way up, then all of the way down. As I watched it it went all of the way back up, and it's been fine since.

My gauge has been fine the last couple of days. Really makes you wonder though.

My 97 does a similar thing. It will intermittantly read high, but only after the ignition has been on for a few minutes. I read on another board (that's now defunct) that it could be caused by a high resistance connection at the fuel sender. The post said there is axcess in the trunk under the mat. I haven't had time to try it yet. We use the fuel used on the display.

My gas guage does this everytime I top it off. That little bit of extra gas that I try to add seems to make it stick or something. Anyway, all i do now is just put in as much gas as it will take until the hose automatically shuts off and the guage seems to work fine.

I noticed that after I filled up the other night that my guage started acting up again. Once I drove 20-30 miles it stopped again.

My 2001 4.0 L V8 had the same fuel gage problem. It ended up being the fuel sending unit. Big money $350. I was not happy about it. The problem is gone now.
