My airbox project

ok, here's the other part of my air setup i'm doing, the first part is that grill. the grill routes the air directly to this airbox that's from a TPI camaro, the bottom part that holds the 2 air filters is cut out for complete unrestrictive airflow. now all i need to do it pipe it into my stock round air cleaner and it'll be finished. I don't know if i want to just find another round aircleaner like the one i got and remove the snorkel and tack weld it to mine, or fabricate my own pipe. what do you think i should do?

Well if youve got access to material, and tools, and you've got the know-how Ide say you should fab somethin up.. Like one piece from the airbox to the cleaner.. A piece of aluminum or stainless coil would work really well.. Run it straight to the aircleaner assembly instead of routing a pipe around to the factory snorkel.. Pull that snorkle off and tack weld the hole shut

well, either way, i'm gonna cut a hole and run something, i want to keep the original one in place for more flow.

my rs has that same setup. i got the z28 airbox
in a junk yard, i was going to just turn my
aircleaner toward the front so that it would line
up with the tpi airbox and just bridge it across
with some pipe.

Ok, so your using the stock round air cleaner and not the dual square filters?? Would it be better to leave the factory filter out, seal the lid, and run the two square filters??

Aside from the filter price difference which is just retarded.. I spent $110 on two square K&N filters.. Fram was $35 for both..

One round filter is like 4 bucks..lol

Damone, perhaps, but it's too late, I already cut the bottoms out of the new box.

tacoma, you can't just turn the box because it'll hit the distributer, if you look you can see that there's an indentation in the back of the cleaner now where the distributer is.

not to mention having to relocate the breather filter and patch up the hole where it was originally

I cut the bottems out of mine too.. My filters still stay in.. Its the top edge of the filter holder that holds the filters.. unless you got rid of the entire bottem piece

no, the bottom piece is there, otherwise the top wouldn't be secured down, besides, I already got a k&n in the round one.

besides, i'm keeping the original snorkel in place too so the round filter will have to be there.

how right you are.....i had never thought of that
well, back to the old drawing board. maybe i could
make a airbox to sit on top of the tbi unit and
cut holes for the crank case filter and run me a
pipe from the middle of the new box to the tpi
airbox, and run filters in it.

that's a lot of work, i think i go the easier route.

here's a photo of the car that inspired me to do the same, found it on cardomain. from the looks of it he just welded on another snorkel like the other one and ran some sort of tube to the dual box.

Well if your leaving the whole stock setup on, Just cut a hole in your aircleaner assembly and fab a pipe from the new airbox to the cleaner assembly.. The pipe would haveto be round on one end, and kind of oval on the other because the air cleaner assembly isnt as wide as the whole in the airbox is it?? It doesnt look like you have much distance between the airbox and the aircleaner assy. Do you think the original rubber hose off of a 305, or 350tpi would work?? I think its a little over a foot long

Yeah you could weld on another snorkle and use the factory rubber pipe off the airbox and and a couple screw clamps to tie it all together

i don't know, probably one from a V6 would be better to use.

that'll probably be the way I go, meanwhile, i'm gonna sleep on it. goodnite everyone.

The V6 one is a little longer.. But its round on both ends.. And the diameter might be a little bigger than the air cleaner assy.. But i guess you could squish it a little bit.. But then you still gotta take out the MAF and put something in its place anyway..
