research paper = YOU look stuff up
survey for research paper = you ask a specific question pertaining to your topic
i'm pretty sure that the majority of us here are not experts in the health field and can therefore not be counted as credible sources.
but as far as an opinion goes: if people want to smoke, let them. as long as i don't have to suffer through the smell of bad cigs while i'm walking around

I think outdoor areas are fair game. Any open public area with good ventilation I can't really see the problem with. As for disposing of the butts and being considerate of others (eg. expecting mothers), I think smokers have a long way to go.

If you want to smoke, then do it in your own home. Why you need to make everyone around suffer through the stench, especially if it gets on your clothes. the health effects are another, but the chances of the contact with it for that short amount of time and it doing damage is minimal. If most smokers were more considerate of their surroundings, it probably would be such a problem, but when they blow smoke your way, or sit there and watch you cough as there smoke blows into your face, and then wonder why youg et all pissed at them, thats a problem. until they can learn to be considerate of others, like Oz pointed out, they can do it in there own home.

Smoking outdoors or in your own house or vehicle I don't have a problem with. It's no worse than the pollutants cars put out and far less than the ones factories put out. Smoking indoors in a public setting around other people is wrong.

I have the occasional bad allergies and don't like to be in the direct line of smoke. But if I'm out at a bar or club I expect it and therefore it doesn't bother me. It does bother me though when people don't give a shit and blow smoke right in your face. I say let people smoke. They know the harmfulness of it. I'm not too worried about second hand smoke, almost everything these day's can cause cancer so why blame it solely on the smokers its stupid.

Smoking in public is a mixed bag. Standing in line to buy tickets or a bus station is no place to smoke since it'll be blowing directly into other people faces. Equally, if there is nobody around who'd be bothered by the smoke then light up by all means.
One last thought is that smoke is a byproduct of a smokers habbit. Piss is a byproduct of a beer drinkers habbit. Most smokers wouldn't want to be on the recieving end of the other guys byproduct.

i was at the 4th of july fireworks and some guy started bitchin at me to put my cigarette out cuz he was with his child and not 5 feet from his baby's face he was burning a sparkler with the smoke billowing everywhere. cigarette smoke is part of the every day pollutants you come in contact with, like mack truck exhaust fumes and road blacktopping. just deal with it; we've already been banned from smoking in public enclosed places, i'll be damned if i'm gonna go home now, so i can smoke a cigarette.

it's called being conciderate...cigarette smoke bothers people, especially those with allergies, asthma, and (as mentioned before) children and expectant mothers. not to mention that it's annoying and smells real bad. it's not everyday when we'll walk behind a mack truck on the sidewalk or at an amusement park while it's blowing its fumes in our faces

Yes, there are some places a person should not smoke. Bars, clubs, anyplace outdoors, ect. Then, whoever complains is on their own. I quit for 3 years. Unfortunately I started again. There are many places you have to expect it. If you can't handle it. Don't go.

im against it in family restaurants and such, where there are gonna be kids or elderly, but i guess it's okay in certain bars, where most everyone that goes there is going to be smoking themselves anyways

 well put and agreed. I don't go around condemming smokers about their fatal habit. It is their choice if they want to smoke or not and should not force their habit on others.

It's a known fact that second-hand smoke is worse for your health than direct smoke from a cigarette. I think smoking in public is okay as long as it's outside.

Actually that's still being debated. I heard something on it a few weeks ago, but I can't recall exactly what it was about.

I don't think people should smoke at all, so obviously I don't think that should do it in public... ciggarettes are more deadly than weed yet weed is outlawed and ciggarettes aren't, weed almost never kills someone directly whereas ciggarettes kill people every day. plus the fact that smoking in public can harm other people with second hand smoke... its all dumb if you ask me

Ummm, isn't it right on the cigarette boxes saying "Surgeon General warning: second-hand smoking is worse than first hand"? I find those little facts to be quite amusing, expecially the part where it says that smoking is harder to quit then cocaine or heroine addiction...but let's not forget that these companies claim that it's not addicting

Simple...you have the right to smoke, I have the right NOT to have to breathe it. Smoke outside.

If it's outside, no problem. If somebody asks you to go elsewhere, do it - it's your problem and shoudn't be theirs too. You have the right to do what you want/need to do, so long as it doesn't impeed the rights of others to not be bothered by it (seems to be good logic for many things)

I think its a courtesy issue. Being a smoker myself, if I'm out in public like at the mall or the movies, I try to keep distance from the crowded areas. I don't like it when somebody goes out of their way to start trouble over it though. That gets my fuse burning pretty quick...

my question is how can u people smoke that stuff tastes and smells like shit...
i can't stand smoking, i usually cover my face up with my shirt or start to cough really loud and say "Who the hell is smoking!" because damn man most of the smokers that i see always need to do it right in front of the entrance of a building
it's like Goddamnit can't u mo fo's take ur cancer and go in the forest or something away from the general population that actually love their bodies and especially their lungs, cuz all your really doing is destroying all the alveoli in your bronchioles. your cutting off your own air supply, what kind of logic is there in that>??? can someone please explain this to me?

Maybe if varies from brand to brand and also regions. In Canada the warnings are many and distributed throughout all packs of cigarettes.

Well thanks for the options guys. I want to see what other peoples opinions were and I got them. I personally think smoking should be banned from ALL indoor facilities but smoking outside is fine. I personally am not a smoker but I think it would suck to have to go home to smoke a cigarette.

Heres a couple facts I found when doing my paper. Rember these when you light up next time.
Two thirds of smoke from a cigarette is not inhaled by the smoker, but enters the air around the smoker.
Second-hand smoke has at least twice the nicotine and tar as the smoke inhaled by the smoker.
Regular exposure to second-hand smoke increases the chances of contracting lung disease by 25% and heart disease by 10%.
Second-hand smoke aggravates symptoms in people with allergies and asthma, and can cause eye, nose and throat irritations, headaches, dizziness, nausea, coughing and wheezing in otherwise healthy people.
Children have a higher metabolism and can absorb higher amounts of smoke than adults.
Infants and children exposed to second-hand smoke are more likely to suffer chronic respiratory illness, impaired lung function, middle ear infections, food allergies and can even succumb to sudden infant death syndrome.
2.4 million Canadian homes with children under 12 years of age report regular exposure to second-hand smoke.
Electronic air cleaning systems would need to increase the air-exchange rate a thousand fold to be effective -- resulting in gale force winds!
Increasing ventilation will dilute the smoke in a room, but will not make it safe since there is no known safe level of exposure to the carcinogens in cigarette smoke.

I don't have much of a problem with smokers. A lot of people at my work smoke, I just dodge the smoke, although my manager has a bad habit of leaving the fuckers to burn away in the ashtray, so I put them out, I just tell him I don't want to smoke em.
On the note of secondhand smoke: Rolies > Tailies. Tailies smell like SHIT.
If someone is going to smoke around me, I'd rather they be smoking weed. Smells better anyway.
