Flat towing 85 K 5

I have a 85 K 5 Jimmy 4x4, 350 engine, manual hubs and four speed auto tranny. My question is, can it be flat towed, as in behind a motor home with all 4 wheels on the ground?

I have been told would be OK if, lock out the hubs, put transfer case in neutral, transmission into neutral or park, with key left on so as too not lock the steering and there should be no problem

Does anyone else have input on this?

Thanks, Stonewall2

i wouldn't put the trans in park....neutral yes, park no.

i wouldn't put the trans in park....neutral yes, park no.

I see no advantage/disadvantage but am curious. Unless I am missing something, with the transfer case in neutral, would it really matter? There would be no input from rear end to tranny with transfer case in neutral.

i would check after a short time towing to see if your tranny temp stays cool. if it doesn't you may have to drop the rear driveshaft. other than that put it in neutral and tow away.

Buddy, Park would still lock your rear wheel i believe. The transfer case is for the front. Not to fimiliar w/ 4x4's , but if it were me i would tow in N.

Definately put truck in neutral. Good luck. I don't like the idea, but if you must. Your right about the transfer case being for the front so it wouldn't make a difference.

the transfer case is for the front and the rear as it will lock the two differentials together, hence, hi-lock. but it disengages the output shaft to the rear when it is put into neutral. it does not care where the tranny selector is if it is disengaged. the steering wheel still needs to be unlocked to follow.
