i did about 99% of it with ad markers, btw. chartpaks and trias; highlights with some prismacolor pencils and gouache. therefore, technique to achieve all f/x similar to watercolor -leave highlight areas blank and/or transparent, and work around them to darker areas.

composition is origninal, ie, there are no angles existing as photographs of either one of the cars. i interpreted them from references. i used my storyboarding skills to compose the frame.

i must work right now on a job for nissan murano. i will go into more of your questions specifically a little later.

thanks, guys for your warm comments and support. there will be more. believe me. my company is "visual homage."

yes. "the last ride", USA network, june 2nd, 8pm. dennis hopper. i storyboarded all major action sequences involving chases. cars are my area of specialty. although i will 'board out anything.

That is awesome!!

Love the storyboard. Do you animate too?

thanks. i did animate years ago. briefly. nothing to write home about, really. i know how to do it on a basic level. i think i will do that, though, in the near to mid-future as a film project. it just makes sense to me -i'm a draftsman. so why not keep doing it? just take it to the next level (i'm telling myself).

tokes, yes i hand-draw them all by myself. freehand. usually only with a ballpoint pen. no pencil layout.

KustmAce, i like your sig. it's funny. how did you do that? animate that yourself?

i have a general concept for an animated film about rival car gangs. like westside story with cars, kind of. it will incorporate the 'transformers' idea a bit. i've had the idea for years. it is dying to be animated. with a killer soundtrack.

shiet. i gotta work all night. i shouldn't even be on here. not done yet. long night ahead of me. and tomorrow.

yo that is HOT all of your scenes i like them and by the way im curious what kind of car is the blue one on the first pic you posted?

that car was initially a 4th gen maxima. however, after i rendered it, i realized it did not look enough like that car! i drew it too narrow. and the body kit further removes it from that identity. but it works out for the better: from the reactions of viewers, the picture stands on it's own anyway. and it is vague enough to hold up in court to skirt copyright issues if it is ever published for profit. so it was a happy mistake.

subsequently, i may do more cars that are not quite "the car," but look vaguely enough like a car you may have seen (like the cars in 'grand theft auto'). this way, i am safer. the car in the tokyo environment, for example, is not even a car that exists at all except in my own fantasy; it is an "amalgam." so this whole way of thinking pushes my own car design sensibilities through instead of relying on pre-existing ones. it makes further sense, too, as in storyboarding for tv and film, the primary concern is to tell a convincing enough story that is most often a fabricated reality. like in a graphic novel.

i sort of went off on a ramble there. oh well.

thanks. if i added up all the time it actually took, not counting days away from it to handle clients and fart around, i probably only put in about 3 full days of work on it. that includes trolling for references, from blank paper to scanning it.

if i were under a deadline, i'd turn it around in about a day, from dawn to dusk. includes layout, reference-finding, meals, runs to kinkos and/or art store, scanning. that is a typical storyboard/comp deadline.

thank you, quarter_mile. front fascia is skyline repro. i have r32 GTR wheels ready for a 5-lug swap in my garage (along with all parts for swap, incl. z32 brakes, ss lines, rotors). i will wait for LSD rear and kei office coilovers before i do entire swap, as i'll have to take all of that shiet out at same time anyway.

how did you get a lefthand drive. i thought they were just right handed...or maybe im dumb. :banghead:

S14 = Silvia and/or 240SX.

Silvia= JDM = SR20DET =right hand drive (like skyline).
240SX= USDM = KA24DE = left hand drive.

you're not dumb. you just didn't know.

also: 1995-96 S14 = Zenki
1997-98 S14 = Kouki

now you know. :)

thanks, al. i bought a sh!tload of car models tonite. so i'm gearing up to do another big one.

Did you say model cars....hee hee

That is funny, I know Kartoonz uses model cars for his art.

One day I had an idea, yes one idea. :) I was speaking or reading about avation art (imparticularly war plane aviation). I read that these artist make models of war planes and use them for ref.

I then thought, uhhmmm. Why not make model cars and use them for ref. It would be so nice to generate any angle I want from a model car.

I mostly carry my digi-cam to get shots of cars on the streets.

So here is my question? Are you going to actaully assemble them as quick as possible or spend the time to make them nice (painted)?

I have tossed around the idea of just assembling mine and priming (gray)them only to see the body lines. Then I said nah, I will make them look nice. I would hate to just do that to my Tamiya and Fujimi models.

Some models I just sand and assemble even leaving out engines...hee hee (do that to Revell kits)

al aka The Lazy Modeler

bonzelite
05-18-2004, 12:06 PM
al, the cars i bought are all die-cast pre-assembled. i don't have time to build models. however, i did get an S14 model kit, as that car is impossible to find as a die-cast. and i will go all-out with that build-up, as i must look at it and enjoy it for years.

although, on a job months ago, i needed a helicopter. finding none die-cast, i had to resort to a kit -the kind that needs glue and paint. and i used scotch tape to assemble it!!! i had the basic thing built in about fifteen minutes!!! i've never gone back to finish it the right way, as i don't care.

bonzelite
05-18-2004, 12:13 PM
models are instrumental, as they afford greater flexibility than photos, and you're essentially drawing from life. i used models constantly on "the last ride" movie. and what the models lacked, i used photos as reference to further dial-in the drawing.

i use models to draw people, too. the company "art s. buck" makes great posable and detailed anatomy models. what the models lack in true anatomical motion i just look at my own body for reference.

asaenz
05-18-2004, 04:02 PM
Yup, that makes sense, using the die-cast.

Time is money.

Thx for sharing.

I like your quick rendering of the Land Rover.
Will you share more steps for your quick rendering tech.?
I mean post a steb-by-step tutorial.

If you don't I understand you are busy.

Alfred
