Drop EclipseRST (one of the Mods) a line and ask him...he's the resident audio guru.

You should just buy an aftermarket Cd player. You will get much better sound quality. An aftermarket unit will hand out a 4V signal or more to your amp giving better sound.

I don't know how they would work with the factory CD player, but after reading an article about how to take the speakers out of the RSX, I decided to take the 5 minutes and look at the rear speakers. Man, they are the same lousy speakers that come out of any other car - paper! So much for the BOSE name!

I decided to purchase new speakers(Panasonic CJ-DD163) from Crutchfield (on sale) and am planning on replacing them myself. The front ones are going to be a little hard to get to, but hopefully it will be all worth it.

No, I don't work for Crutchfield, but I have to say I love that company. I could get the speakers cheaper somewhere else, but they give you the mounting brackets AND wiring harnesses for free and they guide you through installation over the phone if you need it! (Sorry for the infomercial)

After seeing what type of quality parts they used on the speakers, I don't doubt sofast at all. It's probably best to get an aftermarked CD player. The only thing is that I haven't seen an aftermarket in-dash 6CD changer.

Anyone have the specs on the factory unit?

I think that indash 6 disc changers would be hard to make universal due to size. Alpine has a three disc changer. Alpine 3DE-7886R car multi-CD/radio. They have one on ebay http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=3293&item=3095636168&rd=1&ssPageName=WDVW

I found the answer to my own questions! I emailed Bose about the paper speakers that they use and this is the reply I got:

-------------------------------------------------------
Thank you for your inquiry regarding the Bose Music System in your Acura RSX. In answer to your question, all of speakers are paper cone because they offer a better frequency response. Also, Bose Corporation does not recommend replacing the factory installed speakers with after market speakers they are not compatible with the specification of the system.
------------------------------------------------------

So I then asked what the frequency response for the paper speakers were and this is what they said:

-------------------------------------------------------
The Bose Music System in the 2003 Acura RSX has the following system content:

2 - 1.5 " tweeters - 4 ohms in mirror patch

4 - 6.5" wide-range speakers - 2 ohm - doors and rear panel

1 - 4 channels amplifier with custom equalization and signal processing - 100 watts

Bose Richbass TM woofer with Bass Reflex enclosure and two-stage modulation amplifier - 1 ohm - 100 watts

Total System wattage is 200 watts.
--------------------------------------------------------

Notice that they didn't answer my question about the frequency range. Apparently they are "wide-range".

So does anyone know what the frequency range for paper speakers is? I'm sure it's not better than the ones I'm replacing them with - 30Hz to 50kHz.

Do you get the feeling that they don't want people messing with their sound system?

Hope this helps!

Im sure there might be a little truth to what they are saying but I still think its BULL. Have you read the back of a shampoo bottle? It says that it works best if you use the same brand conditioner. In my opinion I think you should get an aftermarket Cd player to use on your subs and buy a set of high end speakers to replace the paper Bose. You may spend a little money but you will be satisfied with the sound.

Well, I put in two of the four Panasonic speakers in the rear and tested them out against the front ones by using the fader to isolate front and rear speakers.

It seems that you get alot more bass out of the rubber material than the paper! Who would have guessed?

As to the higher frequencies, I couldn't really compare since the front fader includes the two tweeters. Although, it did seem that there was not much difference between the front Bose speaker/tweeter combination and the rear speaker highs. It does have a titanium dome tweeter after all.

As to the dash unit, I will probably leave it in there since I like the 6 CD feature and it is decent as far as factory stereos go.

For those that need more than 100W total power, I would suggest getting a different unit and 4 channel amp.

As to the sub in the back, I really don't see how it is another 100 watts! I really don't feel the bass coming out from the woofer but rather from the 4 speakers in the front and rear. So this might have to go at a later time when I have enough $$ to do so.

I don't look forward to putting those other two in the front doors! Looks like alot of work.

Dummy me! I forgot I had right and left balance. Well, I used the fader to the left and placed my ear closer to the front(bose paper crappy speaker) and then to the rear(new panasonic) so that I could remove the tweeter from the equation. Man, what a BIIIIG difference. The paper ones seemed as if they were drowned out! The high tones on the panasonic speakers were so crisp and clear that I could not believe it.

Oh and the paper crappy speakers had a Bose stamp on the back and apparently were made in Thailand. Oh I forgot to mention that one of the speakers had a crumpled edge(no it wasn't me, it was still in the hole BEFORE I took it out)! Can you believe that?

Well, like I said before, so much for the Bose name!

Just finished putting in the front speakers. It was much easier than expected. Apparently, on the 2003 RSX TypeS, the speakers fit perfectly on the factory mount so there was no need for the kit from crutchfield. It took just as much time as the rear speakers since those were hard to fit in the space.

Overall I can hear a lot more higher frequencies and have to put the treble down a little since I'm not used to hearing them. The bass is a little more punchy and I can hear the music clearly outside the car with the volume only set to 1/2.

It was worth replacing those paper cone speakers! I suggest you do the same if you want to get the best sound out of that Bose receiver!
