On my 1989 Suburban the gear selector just flops around, there is no spring tension holding it back in the no shift position,is there a spring in the column that holds this in position? Does anyone know what I need to do to repair this?

Yes, there is a spring in the column that holds the shift lever back (towards the dash). Spring may be broken, missing or the bottom of the shift lever is broken. Need to open up column to find out. Hope this helps.
