Stupid SMOG PUMP

I got a 86 305 tuned port camaro. I then blew a head gasket... still working on that. But I know when I take off the smog pump belt the check engine light comes on. Now I think that is because of the OXY Sensor on the exhaust. Does that affect the air fuel ratio injected into the engine or is that not relevant. And is there a way to bypass the oxy sensor for the exhaust.

There is a way to bypass it. Go to www.thirdgen.org and do a search on the message board for smog pump.

Thanks alot that was pretty F^(k!n& useful. :smokin:

*sigh* why does everyone think that emissions equipment is bad????????? i mean really, how much power do you think you get from that, 2 maybe 4 on a good day??????? and your burning up gas uselessly, and burning up your catalytic converter needlessly. the emissions equipment makes your car run better, not worse, more efficient, getting more power from a given ammount of fuel, instead of dumping lots of fuel in and hoping for the best. kinda the way alot of guys think egr is useless, well actually it fights detonation allowing higher compression and more power. i really wish people would learn more about things before they judge them bad. i dont know why but that really annoys me.

You have crap coming out of the engine into the exhaust and then you have air being pumped at the air coming out of the engine and coliding. Doesn't that affect anything

yes it does, it burns the excess fuel in the exhaust, keeping exhaust temp, and therefore exhaust gas velocity high, helping to scavage the cylender also heating up the cat faster, reducing emmissions, which gets the tree huggers off our ass, saves you money on gas, and also the ammount of air that is pumped through those tiny air injection holes is minute compaired t the volume of exhaust coming out of the port. that exhaust is also under much higher pressure than the air injection system, so the air injection has no negative effect on exhaust flow, but rather helps it, also the air injection pipes are not directed against exhaust flow back into the cyelnder, they are situated on top at a 90 degree angle to the exhaust flow, so again your logic is a bit fuzzy.

The air flow pipe bends at a 90 degree angle and then points straight at the exhaust flow.
But that does not matter, because I allready broke the air flow pipes while trying to get the exhaust manifold off to get to the head to get to the head gasket.

it only makes your car run cleaner, well saposedly. i agree that your not losing much power. you wouldnt even notice it. but this is straight from my dad. his '68 caprice with a 396. when he lived in arizona he took off the smog stuff. then moved to cali. they ran the smog test but then told my dad he had to have the smog pump and eveything, so he went and put it all back on. well guess what. it had less emishions when he didnt have the smog stuff on. they made his car worse. this was about 19 years ago, but when he looked at the two sheets the first one without the smog crap was cleaner. now im sure over the years they have improved all of that stuff but still. eveything still runs off the same basic setup with the exception of cats. they didnt have them back then.

??? dunno bout 88 i guess, but my air pipes are at 90 degrees, pointing down. but still i guess it gets back to all those guys who are like, "yank the emmissions and techno crap, it'll give ya 90 more hp" when they really have no clue what they are talking about.
68chevelle, dunno specificly about your dads situation, but my guess is that somehow something went bad while the emissions stuff was sitting around, pipes rusted up, pump went bad, yada yada, you get the idea. EGR passages clogged with carbon build up something along those lines. that would make the emissions worse.

oh and you might notice an exhaust leak if those pipes are broken, unless you JB welded them shut, or put on headers or something. seeing as they are basicly just holes into your manifolds to have broken them give your exhaust a very easy exit route that isnt where its supposed to go.

my brother took his off, now the car is spitting
gas out the exhaust system.

as in gasoline?????? he might want to fix that. either cap off the holes, or put the pipes back on. ;)

Hell yeah that was my first thought a Camaro thowin flames would be bad ass. But as for the holes in the exhaust, Im not an idiot. I will get the old pipes out and just stop at the hardware store and get some bolts of the same size.
