Coolant Temperature

This forum has helped me very much. It is easy to say it has saved me hundreds of dollars and countless hours. I am getting down to some stupid questions since my 97 Ultra is running perfectly.

According to the Gage information, what is the normal Coolant Temperature? Mine will go as high as 212-218 in the city. On the highway it rarely goes above 205. I know that not very PA will have the Gage calibrated the same, but roughly when temp should the radiator fans turn on? Do they always come on at the same time? Mine appear to be both running or none running.

go to your dealer and get a new thermostat and gasket. Over time, thermostats gradually make the car run hotter, due to the deformation of the compounds that open and close it. This should run you 5-10 dollars, and you can do it yourself.

note: the thermostat factory degree is 195.

You should also check your cooling fans if it gets too hot in traffic. The PCM turns on the low speed fans when the engine temp reaches 100C or when the A/C is on. The high speed fans should be on when the A/C pressure exceeds 210 PSI or the coolant reaches 110C. There are 2 relays under the hood near the firewall.
