How do I know if the fuel pump is bad?

First things. Yes I can hear it, but what I am thinking is maybe it a getting weak. Today i am driving and my fuel gauge stopped working. Then an hour later I put gas in and went down the hiway. 5 mins later the damn thing stalled. Jerked for a bit then died...just like it was running out of gas.

I towed it home and 2 hours later it started in the driveway. It idled for about 2 mins then stalled, started back up and I had a hard time reving it. Had to pump in order to get rpms up and keep them up. I let it die one more time and it wouldn't start back up.

Any idea what it may be? I don't want to have to rplace the fuel pump for no reason.
Thanks

take the vehicle to a shop and have them test pressure that fuel pump is pushing out, then repost and let me know
