Why does everyone admire the Skyline?

Hello members of Automotive Forums,
I'm wondering the reason why every likes the entire skyline line-up. It makes me ponder. What makes this car so great? Is it the massive size of its Inline six? Is it the last car to ever have the inline six now that the engine is never made? Or is its styling cues? is it the good of a car?
But anyway. The car is one of the heaviest cars ever made. Its like a lexus GS400. I'm not hating on the Skyline, its just i'm wondering why everyone likes it. If anyone could. Explain me why everyone likes it in full detail so I can understand why.

I'll take a stab at that one. I'm sure some of the rest of you will flame this guy but remember when you all were new here.
1. To some the car is like a god.
2. Extremely well done aesthetically.
3. The block is nearly indestructible.
4. Weight does not matter if you have enough power.
Example: I've got a buddy with a 572 in his 68 maro and that thing does mid 10s stock engine.
Example: just carbon fiber up the body. It doesn't take whole lot of brains to do so.
Now in your name you have the phrase "GTO" you could be referring to the Pontiac or the 3000 or the stealth version of the mitsu. No problem with the ponty but the mitsu - don't go there. You have to change the belts every 40,000 miles. And I don't care what mitsu it is the trannys and the engines will blow up on you way too easily. So try to stay out of the mitsu stuff if you can; I know they look pretty but other than that their junk. Well maybe a good daily car but then just buy an 80's vette with a zz4 ho engine in it and you'll be quick and you should have good MPG. Plus that thing is not going to blow up on you that easily.
5. They are extremely rare in the states.
6. Its Nissan’s super car.
---------------
If I left anything else please add some more. Or jab me with your insults. It’s when I see the GTO was just jumping out at me...uhhh.

Actually there is no need to flame him for asking a valid question.
A brief history of myself in the car scene.
Being American and growing up in the V8 scene, I've always owned V8 powered cars. The list is long but the short version of some of the more popular cars were, 1969 Chevelle SS, 72 Stingray, 71 Camaro Z28, 78 Camaro Z28, and 79 Trans AM. I've always been in the belief there was no replacement for displacement. I've also drag raced for 12 years.
When I first saw a Skyline I didn't know what the hell it was. I actually quite like the shape, so popped into a local importer who always seemed to have quite a few of these cars. I got my first education on them, and was taken out in a 1991 R32 GTS-t. I couldn't believe a car that was of this size with only a 2 litre engine in it could perform the way it did. So I bought a GTS ( non turbo version) right there as I couldn't afford the cash layout for the turbo car.
I grew from there and since I've owned a 1991 GTS-t and now a 1992 GTR.
What really impresses me though is the technology of these cars, and how old they are (R32's). It is hard to understand unless you've owned one, driven or have been in one. While the GTR is the pinnicle, still the other turbo models are quite impressive for what they are. At least in New Zealand at the time these cars are cheap as chips and basiclly compared to most other countries they still are. As a quick example my GTR could be had for @$16,000 USD.
The GTR is a techno monster. Way a head of its time or it was. Handling is far better than 99% of the cars on the market. While others will argue, I've driven Porsche's, a Viper RT/10, various Vette's, Camaro's, Trans Am's, Mustangs, and one Ferrari 308GT all of comprable year to my GTR. The others here in New Zealand are way over rated for the price you pay.
While the Skyline isn't the end all car for what it is, and what it can do is amazing. The ability to squeeze emense power coupled with the ability to put it to the ground and good handling makes for a wicked package.
Interior wise again it is of nothing like anything most will ever sit in. The seating position is as close to perfect for a road as your going to get. The GTR has seats that the only real upgrade would be like a bride seat. The responds so well to commands without giving you negative feed back, even when pushed. It is far more than a straight line point and squirt vehicle. When you begin to squeeze more power out of it you can use it vertially anywhere on the road/circuit. It doesn't try and kill you for thinking about, can I put my foot down in the wet? Hell yes you can. You can be agressive in corners and the stopping power is again amazing.
Sure there are better cars out there but you will pay a heavy premium in price to out achive it. In the production car world other manufacturers are just catching up to something that is 15 years old now. Unlike the playstation games, the GTR behaves much better and in real life one of the better looking cars in my opinion.

Thier heavy for thier size, but then so is any AWD car, and they do more than make up for it.
And the RB engines are VERY heavy, and rather large for thier capacity, but then thats the very reason they are able to produce such large power numbers, and its a throw back to thier development history from the L series, orginaly Mercedes design from the 60s.

Does the 32 GT-R out handle c4 vettes? I have one of those with a zz4 HO. And also a 72' Nova with a caddy 500, 500hp/550 torque in a car that only weighs 2700. That car WILL do 11s stock weight/engine. Only spent 3gs. With 6gs at the suspension the car will out handle just about any car on the street or at least keep up with them. No lets think 2 plus 6 is 9. Well 9gs is not that bad for a car that does 11s and out handle most or all cars. The only problem is MPG.
What I'm waiting for is for Nissan to make a big block V8 that has a good a block as the 26 in a skyline in America that has at least as much as my Nova. Lastly having awd. That would be the ultimate car to me.
Though Razor is the skyline all that worth it to buy from Motorex for what I can do with that amount of money on an American car?

I don't think Nissan will build a car like that, but does the 5.6L 'Endurance' V8 from the Titan fullsize pickup and Armada fullsize SUV come close? :icon16: Sure it's only got 305hp and 389lb-ft, but that's in truck tune. I'm sure Nissan can tune it up and make a more appropriate version for a sports car...if they wanted to.

why would you need or want a v8 anyway if you can get a v6 to make as much power. I mean thats one thing i really love and respect about the skyline, is that its a V6 that can make some huge ponies and hang with the V8 guys.
Not sure about this, but wouldn't a 10 second turbo v6 be more fuel efficient than a 10second V8 anyway?? or do they burn around the same amount of fuel? coz i'm thinking the V6 would also be more fuel efficient.

Well V8s typically have more displacement than V6s. That helps the V8s have more power/torque potential in the long run, with less stress on the engine.
As for fuel efficiency, it's probably more dependent on displacement and how the engine is tuned rather thanthe number of cylinders.
For example, if Nissan's VQ35DE V6 were tuned to 400hp, the fuel economy would probably be somewhat similar to that of the 400hp 3.6L V8 from the Ferrari 360M.

Hey the skyline is a L6. And it only matter to what you tune it to. Though if you talking on expenses, the v8 is more expensive to get goond MPG though the L6 is going to be more expensive to get the amount of power you can get out of a v8.

Well checkout what I wrote about the mitsu gto - its the same thing as a stealth and a 3000gt. No difference (someone correct me if I'm wrong). Those cars blow there engines and trannies all the time at the track. I have yet to see someone that doesn't spend an arse load of money on there 3000 and doesn't blow themsevles up. And to the ferrari or the ponty no problems there. Just read what I wrote before. Check out other sites - mitsus suck nissan's left nut.

From my understanding that ALL mitsu engines/trannys blow like no other. I know a guy who gets at least 5 or 6 mitsus every weak at his shop. Rarey does he gets nissans. He does get alot of dodges in though, not surprising.

I think the appeal of the car is two-fold, first you have the people who recently learned about the car (mostly from fast&furious) and like for that reason, then you have the people who like it for its performance potential versus price (except US legalization fees). To me, I've liked them for several years, I don't remember the first time I learned about it but it was in high school (6-7 years ago). I was excited when I found out Motorex could get them legally, and thats what I'm working toward.

It's kinda like asking, "why is your favorite color your favorite color?'......
Being in the Heart of Dixie, I am surrounded by domestic Muslce, so a few years back, when I sold my Camero and started eyeing the Eclipse, I started being seduced by the import side---then comes Gran Turismo and everyone I know is idolizing this car you can't even HAVE in America...that got me intereted.....Later, beng in the Navy, I saw these things up close in their hometown and I knew someday I would have to have one. Then, the week I got out of the Navy I finally caught 2Fast2Furious on DVD, and the PRELUDE, where the "Brian" character is on the run and he just goes and throws down cash on a Skyline was kind-of like a defining moment for me---just seeing the right thing at the right time and everything clicks.....In Zen we call that "satori". That was perhaps my last, most vivid "awakening". At a time in life when I had no idea or direction to go, I have to say every single thing in my life now goes back to that single, defining moment.
But it kinda goes to what one person said---some worship it like a God.
That's me. I BOW TO SKYLINES.

by the way, that's why I never got the Eclipse---I saw too many break like little toys.....My wife says that anyone that upgrades their power and doesn't upgrade the vital components--i.e., doing the chip swap to get +400hp out of the Eclipse without getting better camshaft, etc, is asking for trouble, and I think she must be right cuz she knows cars better than I ever could hope to. So, in a sideways kinda way, I guess she's got me wanting a 1995/96 body style Eclipse again, but only for a show car, cuz when it comes to racing the SKYLINE is all I ever want. But the word on the street has and probably always will be that Mitsu Breaks. I do like the new rivalry between EVo vs. WRX, but in that one I take the WRX any day. Their numbers are basically the same but the EVO is still a Mitsu.

My wife is pushing me to get her a CLK430 and I want a Navi. I rationalize the Navi for pulling the R32 to the tracks and shows (I will not be worrying about legalizing it at first so that I can get it faster). How she rationalizes the CLK430 I don't know. She is sitting right next to me so I imagine she will be telling me again for the 100th time so who knows? I used to be into luxury so I understand (she just said "don't you want me to have the best?", which is true so I guess she wins...)---my previous vehicles before I entered the Navy were a Lincoln Continental and Tahoe, and this was after my decked out v8 camaro so I guess I go threw phases....By the way I am embarassed about the v8, especially since I might have gone with a beautiful 96 eclipse that called my name every day when I drove by it---then I would have to pretend I didn't hear it (or didn't have auditory hallucination) after I got the chevy.
Oh well. Our stable of vehicles is aged and increasingly causing me to crave all new stuff. I still like my Z71 cuz it was the first vehicle I ever had but I still need a Navi (and a CLK430 convertible I am reminded for probably the millionth time). Who knows, if things continue going as well as they are maybe we will get them both on the same day. I remember when we got the Tahoe---we went to the Chrysler dealership to get a $3 vacuum hose and left with a $35000 truck. I remember the dealer treated us like crap cuz I was in adidas pants and a "wife-beater" shirt and I think J was in her favorite yellow sophie shorts and a car show t-shirt----we surely looked like young nobody punks to this slick ass car dealer----that was until he ran my credit and then his additude changed and we drove off the lot that day without putting down a dime.
Appearances can be decieving, I'm sure that guy learned his lesson.

Appearances can be decieving, I'm sure that guy learned his lesson.

it's not the last inline six! ford have an inline six turbo in australia, and would be an awesome car if it weren't so heavy.
the reason i got a skyline was because its the best thing a young bastard can buy, and performs almost as well as a 400 grand ferrari.
mitsubishi are going broke, in australia at least, we tax payers are actually paying for every car made just to keep a few jobs going, all the dealers are handing back their dealerships, and the factory in adelaide would have closed about three years ago, if it wasn't given millions by the government

To me the Skyline could be the GOD of the known car world.
When you think about it, these cars pretty much re-wrote the history books, there performance is second to none (stock or modified), You have to look at it as and all round package and the GT-R has it.
I even have it tattooed on my arm  thats how much i love them.
But i think it all comes down to performance history, the GT-R has a great record here, it's like Ferrari in the F1, there record is almost faultless and they have a very big following.
p.s
I think the R34 GT-R is one of the meanest looking cars going around. The headlights look like there glaring at you, like an old samurai waiting to strike you down. I think the looks alone of all the GT-R's is enough to get afew people thinking, anyway there my thoughts.
Always remember "GODZILLA"

No offense T-88 its not the best car in the world stock. Yes its one pf my favorite Japanese cars and thats because it can do things a lot of cars in its class cant do. Same as the Evo. That car can do things other cars for the price cant. But if you ask me it isnt God's gift to man like the 2 Fast 2 Queer crowd like to make it out to be.

Thats your opinion, and people who live off them movies are down right stiupid.
Well, what other 4wd class is there? EVO's, WRX's, GT-R's all other 4wd's (sports cars), to me are all in the same class, yes some can be modified to hold more power, but if all were modified to a limit of, say, 400bhp, who would win around a track and has this been done?
I would tend to think the GT-R's would pull through, but there my thoughts.
And we won't go into drag racing, it's not a good way to find the true performance of a car.

And also, on the Ford XR6 Turbo in Australia, it is a very nice car, few teething problems, but the next generation should be better.
it goes hard though and looks good too.
