Well this is a no-brainer. Who the hell cares WHY it burns oil? Stop worrying about it and get the Corvette! hahah, I can't believe no one has advised him in that direction yet! My father has a C5. I've driven it quite a bit. Love everything about it. I would have traded my very heavily modded Z28 for the mostly stock Vette in a heartbeat. No Camaro/Firebird can compare. GET THE CORVETTE!

its a shame, some one buy a car
pay 25-28,000 for it and stuff like
this happen. i hope nothing happens
to mine its got almost 16,000 miles
on it. my warranty is long gone.
but good luck, if you can fix it, keep it.

well.. if you dont tell the dealership that it eats oil lake a fat kid does twinkies than you could get like 7 for it.. (as long as its not completely obvious you could get away with it) just my guess.. but nowhere near where you would expect.. Cant sell it privately because then you have to tell em, and then you wouldnt even get 6.. at least not from me.. trade it in on the C5, then have some fun rollin in style.. if the Z06's werent around 50 grand i would tell ya to spring for one of those..

well you can go either way, if the vette has a LS1 and better yet a six speed, youre gonna have the same problem. all LS1 engine piston rings are sub-standard, there is a bullitin on it, ive already done the rings in several corvettes and one camaro. your car is a 2001, it might still be under warrante, unless your past mileage or bought it at the very beginning of the year. but yeah all the LS1 engines have the oil consumption problems. especially the ones with six speeds. cuz they tend to get wound higher. so its a damned if ya do damned if you dont. corvette would be alot more fun, but think of your insurance money spent on the corvette over a few years vs the camaro, in the long run the rings would be a cheaper investment, and the car is more usable as a daily driver. the hatchback, back seat, folding rear seat for more room, yadda yadda, so its reallly up to you, i mean if i had money and room for a corvette as a toy, and a daily driver next to it, id get the vette, but i personally would rather have the camaro if it was my only car, cuz you can actually use it for stuff. and its still quick as shit through a goose. especially if its an SS. personally id try and get it under warrante, and if not, eh, price of ownin a car, aint life grand. :) just my two cents

Keep the SS and fix it...you can buy a Vette anytime, they are becoming very common in my opinion. SS's on the other hand...every time one is totalled, its one less on the road.

yea, sounds like you have a nice car, i want one pretty much like yours.... id keep it, unless your rich and have plenty of money to pay insurance and pay the car off etc....

You know what, I have to agree the Camaro SS is perhaps more of a symbol tha a BASE C5... keep it!!!

What does the six speed have to do with oil consumption??? I'm not arguing with you, I have the T56 and it does burn oil, I'm just totally missing the connection here.

Yeah. SS = collectors item. Vette's are being made every day. The reason that it might not be smoking even though its burning oil is that synthetic oil doesn't smoke. Just a FYI. Good luck.

well the reason is in that post right behind the statement, the six speed transmissions tend to be driven harder, and wound to higher rpms for performance driving by the very nature of what they are. automatics shift earlier meaning lower revs, so in a manual the rings tend to get worn out earlier. thats all. not like the transmission its self causes damage, but how that trans makes the owner drive the car does the damage. although its no fault of the driver either.
