mike123
05-07-2004, 12:24 AM

05-07-2004, 12:25 AM
cool man. just ditch those heads and your good to go. thats just what i want to get my hands on for my next bild, except with the 062 heads. what are you planning for it?

ridge_runner
05-07-2004, 12:26 AM
yea, i just painted mine hugger orange, and i painted the heads black, looks nice

68chevelle
05-07-2004, 12:27 AM
i dunno about the orange. im a chevy guy, but orange is everywhere. i tend to prefer to be different. my block and heads are black and with the black engine compartment and the right about of silver and chrome i think it looks alot better than if it was orange.

Genopsyde
05-07-2004, 12:27 AM
it's kinda dirty

ridge_runner
05-07-2004, 12:29 AM
yea i didnt go to crazy with the orange, just the block and the water pump, i think the orange black and chrome will stand out, i just painted my hole engine compartment with epoxy type scratch resistant paint, i painted it gloss black, turned out nice

yeah those engines leaked coolant, not a big deal, thats the same reason i got my 99 tahoe engine, had an intake leak that collapsed the lifters and scored up some bearings, but the rest of the engine was solid. if the cylenders were screwed, youd know it, its pretty obvious when you have scuff marks or scoring. but like i told ya before, if you are running a mild cam, and just makin a street motor, those heads should be fine. just dont expect to make a street terror out of em.

protouringparts
05-07-2004, 01:16 AM
I beg to differ. vortec heads have been rated up to 475 hp with a .550 lift roller cam and a Super victor intake, If I may say so, that IS a street terror enough to whip a Z06 and give a new viper a run for his money.

68chevelle
05-07-2004, 01:25 AM
protouringparts, dont talk unless you know what your talking about. i dont mean to sounds like an ass but those heads were not stock. im guessing you probably read that im a mag. yes they can take them much lift but not stock. stock i think is like .470, corect me if im wrong 89irock. and by the way he was refering spacificaly to the 906 casting number because there were two different casting numbers for those heads. the 906, that suck, and the 062, the good ones, and im willing to bet the ones that were used on the engine your refering to were the 062 heads.

68chevelle
05-07-2004, 01:29 AM
sorry about that, i read that now and it makes me seem like an ass. i didnt mean to i had a bad night.

So how hard is it to paint the engine compartment?

tacoma man
05-07-2004, 01:55 AM
Motor Or Under The Hood.

mike123
05-07-2004, 02:04 AM
i thought it was .480

zboom86
05-07-2004, 02:31 AM
engine compartment the engine bay

68chevelle
05-07-2004, 03:53 AM
yeah its right in the .470-.480 range. my first thought was .480 but i figured i would go with the lower number to be safe.

its not that hard to paint the engine compartment. i did mine when it took the front end off so it was pretty simple cuz you can paint everything indavidual and i think that way it comes out better. but it depends on if you have things in the way you dont want to get painted like the engine and everything else. then it becomes more complicated.

yeah there are two different castings, the 062 castings when proporly built are bad ass heads, that flow more than some bowtie racing heads. i actually have a set of 062 heads that will be on my next engine build. i love the vortecs, but he is running the 906 heads, which are the ones used on box trucks, they ahve pressed in exhaust valve seats that cant be enlarged, and the exhaust port is slightly less efficient than that of the 062 casting. id say that 350hp is about all you can expect from the 906's, but yes, proporly built 062 castings can support up to 550hp. naturaly asperated. but they also have limitations that have to be fixed to get to that point. stock vortec heads will make about 400-450 hp on a street/strip motor. on average

hmmm..... well i can clearly see the factory cross hatching on the bores, which is good, means lots of highway miles and regular maintanence, but from some of the pics, it does look like you had some piston rock at the top of the cylenders, the first pic for instance, notice the majority of the bore is an olive color, then on the axis of the piston travel there are those grey areas, that look like wear caused by the piston rocking back and forth at the top of its travel. while most people do anyway, i reccomend you have the block done .30 over to clean that up.

very pretty, me like 350, see my 181 in my sig? :grinno: of course i still have a 350, hell of an engine

ridge_runner
05-08-2004, 01:53 PM
yea i would take it, get it cleaned real good, and if its cracked they might be able to see it like they did mine, and it will also clean out every nook and cranny and the water passages, and of coarse new cam bearings and freeze plugs

mike123
05-11-2004, 11:31 PM
ok so i got the pistons outa there and got some better pictures

the only kinda imperfections i can feel inside them would be the carbon build up at the top where teh rings end
(didnt need to use a ridge reamer to get teh pistons out they came out really easy)

tacoma man
05-11-2004, 11:37 PM
looks like a real good block. i took a 305
in and had it bored 30 over plus had to get
a sleave put in the #2 cyl. but anyway the
engine bath and cleanup costed $90
plus he put in new freeze plugs, cam
bearings.

mike123
05-13-2004, 01:05 AM
so you think i should get it 30 over ? or does it look ok?

ridge_runner
05-13-2004, 01:31 AM
if your gonna put new pistons and rings in it your gonna have to atleast get it honed, i 4got whats its called maybe cross bored, cross honed?? and if you dont the rings wont seat right, and if you wanna take it .30 over its up to you, but if it dont need it i wouldnt

korndogg
05-13-2004, 01:33 AM
im pretty sure its cross bored. dont quote me on that tho.

68chevelle
05-13-2004, 01:37 AM
well im not sure i could be totaly wrong but do you mean... when you get it honed, it crates a cross hated pattern, i think. wow my brain is not working very well right now.

ridge_runner
05-13-2004, 01:38 AM
yea something like that, my isnt either, its been a long day...

korndogg
05-13-2004, 01:39 AM

ridge_runner
05-13-2004, 01:50 AM
well yea, thats what we get the most of, when other stuff needs to be done i do it, but alot of times its just basic shit like tire rotations and oil changes

korndogg
05-13-2004, 01:52 AM
yeah im one of those guys, well we dont do oil changes but we do tires, exhaust, suspension, alignments, alternators, starters, brakes, that kinda stuff. and im very unpaid for knowing that stuff too.

ridge_runner
05-13-2004, 01:54 AM

protouringparts
05-13-2004, 11:39 AM
Okay, well, yes it was a dynoed engine in a magazine and it was a pair with 1.94 1.50 valve and I am sure it had screw in studs and springs to handle that lift, but, the heads were vortec, and all heads that are bulit to handle that kind of lift are not stock.
