mainly for racing purposes but my girlfriend likes to drive my car and she can only drive an automatic and i'm just wondering if there is a big difference between them in terms of performance

well, "tiptronic" type transmissions are typically automatic trannies that allow manual control of gearchanging. auto trannies are usually not geared for optimum performance, and take too long to react to commands to shift.
short of using a computer to control it, a manual gearbox driven properly is the fastest way around the racetrack.
as for your girlfriend, why not just teach her to drive stick?
