1998 Silverado Fuel Pump

Ok, here is my dilema...My '98 Silverado's fuel pump is getting louder and more obnoxious. I never have liked that whining sound it makes from day one. I have 75,000 miles on it and I think it might be on it's way out. My questions are: 1) how hard is it gonna be for this shadetree mechanic to replace? 2) where is it located? 3) can anyone reccomend a good one that may not make the annoying sound?

If you got a friend that will help you lift a bed of the frame that is easier than droping the tank. The fuel pump is in the tank. And it doesn't matter what brand, they all make that noise.

Thanks for the reply. That tell me evrything I needed to know. Looks like the local Chevy dealer will get to bleed some bucks out of me.

i just changed mine and it wasnt really that bad. 8 bolts holding the bed and 4 people to help lift the bed would be best. just thought id run it by ya before ya spend couple hundred bucks at the dealer for a 85 dollar ac delco pump

I used a floor jack and lowered the tank. I disconnected the drive shaft to allow more room. After it was lowered slightly I snipped the plastics lines on the pump rather than use the goofy tool to reliease the fittings. After the tank was out of there I used a 1/4" drive socket and a needle nose to remove the fuel lines. I recomend using an AC/Delco pump because the fuel sending unit and pump are all in one and the price difference isn't that much and when your spending $300.00 you may as well put the same thing in you take out. They are all noisy, But when mine started getting loader my fuel gauge also quit working so I replaced it. Doing it by myself it took about an hour and fifteen minutes.

Try changing the fuel filter on the rail under drivers door. Changed mine and pump quieted down significantly! Still slight noise but guess it's normal for GM stuff nowadays?

To do the job right you should drop the tank, and clean all sediment from the tank. Even thought there is a screen on the pump, the stuff left in the tank can still wipe out a new pump. The best way to clean the tank is to steam clean it and let it dry out. If you don't want to pay out the you know what for a gm pump I have had really good luck with Air-Tex pumps. Also all replacement pumps for a '98 are the complete unit.
