thought you guys might like to read this. since one of the most common topics is changing gears, and what gears to go with. sometimes you can over do it when changing gears

damn... very interesting, it actually slowed the car down..... and i have a traction problem enough with the 3.42s damn

i guess the only way 4.10s would benifit you if you had slicks.... or you jus got on it easy and once you hit like 10 mph punch it, and you had some sticky ass street tires

well im thoughts on this is why didnt they use the drive that didnt use overdrive. i dont know about the trannys they are using, but the 4L60E has drive with overdrive and drive that doesnt go into overdrive....

yea, so you think it shifted into overdrive when they were doing the test?

yea, i dont wanna put these 4.10s in and actually be slower bcause of traction issues

well gearing is really related to hp, if you have more hp, you can run more gear, but if you put too much gear in a car with too few ponies, it will be spinning higher than its powerband, and youll be accelerating slower than you would with lower gearing. the way i look is if you pass the traps in second or third gear, you need more gear, but if you hit overdrive halfway down, then its time to step back down a little.

yea ill be pushin around 400 or more with my 350 and its .60 over, so you think i should stick with the 3.42s or the 4.10s

id say either the 3.42's or 3.73's would be great, but its always been my stand that 4.10s are to deep for a street car anyway

yea ive been tryin to find some 3.73s but there damn expensive, even on ebay

it actually said in on the site that it shifted into overdrive during the test....

The guys at www.camarov6.com always said that 3.73s were THE BEST... their reasoning was pretty much the same as the article, w/ 4.10s instead of finishing at the top of third @ max power, you'd finish at the bottom of sluggish forth @ low power, which would actually slow you donwn at the end.

dont get me wrong joseph, i love the awsome power of 3:73's too, but just last night i got taken off the line twice because of the 3:73 gearing in an 88 RS. the first time i just hammered it off the line and did nothing but spin, then the second time i decided to ease into and then floored it when i got to about 15mph, the ass end slid sideways about 8 feet and tired to U-turn on me. the driver behind me was scared shitless and left in awe :cwm27: of course once i hooked up i blew the other driver's doors off in no time. but it was a cavalier!!! also take into consideration that my tires are completly bald, but i'm startin to think that 3:42's would have been more practical

it seems like the decrease in performance from too high a gear ratio comes with the loss of traction, i dont know why theyre downplaying it thought i mean with a strong rear and some nice traction (z compound, slicks?) wont it still give you better acceleration provided the tires dont break loose?

yes you can most certainly hook up with the right tread and suspension, but thats only part of the problem. with too high of gearing you run out of RPM's and acceloration before the finish line. i think 3:73's would be ideal for a track, when using the right tires, but for street they absolutly suck unless your on nice flat dry concrete, but blacktop is a nightmare and somewhat dangerous. i'm not questioning ridge runners ideas or anything, he just happens to the one i'm picking on. but he was talking about using 4:10's for strip. and i seriously think he's going lose time with those gears

yea i emailed the guy last night who i won the 4.10s from and said if he cant provide me a pic of them im not going to send ihm the money, im not going to be putting in the 4.10s as of right now, probably when i get my t-56 ill start considering putting them in after i have gotten slicks , and beefed up the rear end
