Like Enzo said, not in his own words but, He built cars to go fast not to just look good....and thats exactly what the F40 is, a car that is VERY fast, and with a body that is there for aeroynamic purposes...(that still looks good imo).

I know that the F50 is awesome in many respects, but there is something about the F40 that just....stirs the soul (and it has been doing so since 1987!). In my dream world where I have an endless supply of cash, I would have a 288 GTO, a 550 Maranello and of course, the mighty F40.

Must be the F40, not only does it look awesome, but you never hear a bad word said about it, unlike the F50 which was slated for having the engine bolted directly to the chassis causing vibration.

I'd pick the F40 just because I think it's one of the most beautiful Ferraris ever. I just HATE the wheels on the F50! Plus the F40 is so RAW it would be an experience just starting it and driving down your garage way!
But in reality anyone who could afford to buy and especially RUN a toy like that could afford to buy both and would probably have a large collection of exotics as well. But if I was given one for a day it would definitely be an F40...

I like the F50, classic V12 engine based on the 1990 F1 engine driven by Prost! A turbo to me is like a last resort, a desperate attempt for more power. I also preffer the design, rouded edges over the F40's sharp ones, but that's just my sychosis. Renoir was affraid of sharp edeges and always rouded off the corners of his furniture.
I'm sure the F40 would probably beat the F50 in a duel though.

I think that depends on the criteria of the duel, if your talking about straight line speed the F50 would win. If your talking about driving pleasure then the F40 has beaten the F50 in all of the comparisions i have read. Turbo's are a bit of a last resort but you have to remember that the F40 came out in 1987 and getting 475bhp out of an engine was not as easy then as it is now.:smoker:

The F40 KO's the F50. when i said tha F50 is "pretty" i meant its too girly and doesnt have enough attitude, not like the F40. besides the F40 is just too raw for the F50, i have the distinct feeling it would spank it around a track, higher power to weight ratio 441 vs 424
the F50 wasnt an improvement over the F40 as it should have been

The F40 is a hard core racing machine, the F50 is a more kindler and gentler Ferrari with a softer setup for the rich dweebs like Bill Gates who can afford these cars, but do not drive them hard. Did you know he had an F40 and sold it a week later?
If the F50 was worked on it could be just as fast. :D

i wouldnt go OTT and call the F50 soft or gentle, or made for dweebs to cruise around in.. ferrari has sensors in the car so it can find out how hard the car is being driven everytime its serviced, and they very much want you to cane the thing! its still an awesome driving machine. just not an F40

You could not be more wrong
The F50 is not an upgraded F40. As a matter of fact, its not as quick as an F40. Only slightly more powerful and substantially heavier, it's not a match for the '40.
The coolest Ferrari being the prima donna F50? unlikely

F40 all the way. I love them both, but the F50....i dunno....it just doesn't look as mean. The 50 seems to be a bit bigger in the body, and that doesn't suit a Ferrari (look at the Testarossa). You are correct, though, the F50 is NOT an upgraded 40. Different engine, chassis, body, everything....I'd still have to chose the F40, though. Yeah, it has a V8 instead of a 12, but hey, it's still a Ferrari. The F50 is actually a little faster top end than an F40, though.

Here's why I'd choose the F40 over the F50 anyday:
Would you believe that the F50 could be beaten by a late sixties Mitsubishi Kei jidosha?
Lets see here, the F50 develops 521hp from 303 cubic inches @ 8500rpm.
And the Mitsubishi Minica '70 GSS develops 38hp from 21.8 cubic inches @ 7000rpm.
Somethings very fishy here, the F50 produces 1.71hp per cubic inch. The minica? well it produces 1.74hp per cubic inch - more than Ferrari.
Not only does this engine produce more horsepower per cubic inch, but it does so over 1000rpm lower!
If I were to pay major $$$ for a supercar, it had damn well better have a supercar engine in it!
This is why if I had the money I'd by an F40, there's no use in buying a Ferrari with an engine that's not even up to mitsubishi standards in it! And face it, even for a Ferrari the F50 is ugly.

I think that the F40 is better, it an actual car, it's an actual Ferrari. If Ferrari were a rug, the F50 would be the coffee stain in the corner, true it's still part of that rug - but it just doesn't match up to the rest, it's sort of un-Ferrari. I don't know why people think the F50 is cool, maybe I just ignore the "cool factor" and go look straight at the engineering?

I still don't know the F50 just doesn't seem right for a Ferrari, I mean the engine is spinning way too fast for what it's getting done (and what it's getting done is nothing by F40 standards) That and the F40 is just more Ferrari - it's hard to explain.
O.K., so the 400i was boxy and ugly (and in general just goofy looking) I don't really know much about it's specifications or performance so I don't have anything to say about it. But maybe it should be the edge of the carpet that's beginning to seperate...

I love the V12 and the F1 concept of the F50, but it looks like a kit car compared to the F40. The F40 design is based on the 308/288 look, and that is just all Ferrari. :)

Its funny how you guys talk about the F50 not being a true racecar and being too soft. It was being such a racecar that gave the f50 its strengths and weaknesses.
Its handling was better than the f40's and that was because of its ultra stiff chassis with no rubber or springs. This combined with the chassis mounted engine was what made the ride so uncomfortable.
It is the engine that I think is the downfall. It is a downfall because it was designed around an already existing f1 engine. It was so low on torque because they wanted to make it as close to an f1 car as possible and that meant not increasing the displacement much.
In the end admittedly the F40 may feel a little more like a racecar than the f50, but its not like the f50 was soft, it still had roll up windows, no airconditioning, no carpet...... etc.
Also the f50 went around fiorano significantly faster than the f40. On most courses infact the F50 beats the f40, but on a few really high speed ones the f40 is capable of keeping up.
I will try to find some stats to back up my claims.

the times just proved that an F50 is quicker around a track than an F40. and considering that the F40 is quicker in a straight line (at least after 100mph), it just goes to show you how well the F50 handles. And its by no means soft, its about as brutal as they come.
