Add power to 88'...

I have a 88' V6 3.0L 4runner... I was wondering what would be the best way to add power to it. I think a supercharger would be the best way to go, but apparently they dont make any for the 3.0L. I already have headers on it, so any other ideas to add horsepower would be greatly appreciated.

A new set of cams would also help. Match them to your headers/engine combination and your vision of performance. Be moderate - not radical.

New intake system would add a little.

I have a 91' and i put downey headers and full 2 1/2 inch exhaust w/ high flow cat and muffler, downey aircleaner plus a jet chip and i can chirp my 32" a/t's hard comin' outa' first. i also have centerforce clutch(stage 1).I think the chip is a good investment if you have already added bolt-on upgrades it seems to really take advantage of them.If you have a/c the flex-a-lite elec fan sure helps at highway speeds(60-70)when you have your a/c on.Do not know if any of this helps but at least you have something to compare to.And lemme' know if you find or do anything that you feel is a good horsepower boost i'll do the same ;)

Yea...so I've decided that this summer I'm gonna put an a downey exhaust system on the 4runner, along with the downey air filter. I'm pretty sure that I'm also gonna put new cams on it. I would like to put a jetchip on also, when you got yours, did u get the computer upgrade, or just the v-force chip, because they dont make the v-force chip for an 88'.

Also, any guesses on how much HP doing all that will add, I'm hoping for at least 30 more minimum.

Thanks...

i really dont know how much hp it gained.I wish i had a way to test it.The downey system is a bit loud(sounds good though)if i was to guess i would say i added a total of around 30+ it has got a lot more pull in all gears even 5th which cruises nicely at 70.As far as the chip goes i sent my whole ECM to jet. dont do the chip untill you have done all your other mods.then when you do it list all your mods on the sheet they provide I passed smog also. i have not done my cams yet .... if you do yours let me know what kind power increase you get.. all said and done i'm very happy w/ the mods i have added my truck is a quick little toyota :)peace:)

You probably have to be careful with cams so that you don't use unapproved (off-road) ones. Make sure they are emissions approved if you live where it matters.

up grade cooling will help w. power. better radiator and fan, air intake K&N is my prefrence. only thing that i can think of that hasn;t been said would turbo charge or drop a small block V8 into it

When you ordered you exhaust & cat, did u order them directly from downey? If so how much was shipping? I'm afraid that its gonna be insanely expensive, since I live in Hawaii. What do you think?

first of all i love the whole system i had it on my 88' 4 banger and it helped a lot but on my 3vze(v6) it rocks ,its not that heavy. but i'm sure it will be a bit pricey...gotta look at your options..find the slowest route and as far as KN air cleaner the filter is the same as in the downey but the downey system is a nicer rig w/ a much better water drainage system if your gonna cross streams it will hold zero water.which is nice ;)

and yes i did order from downey 1 562 949 9494 i forgot to say putting those headers on is a BITCH its about 600 bucks or more to get a shop to do it.it took me 15 hrs plus i had to cut my old exhaust to peices to get it out and i had to pay a welder to make custom "y" pipe......but like i said before its fast and i love it

I dig the look of the snorkel on a rig, a friend of mine just put one on his 86 Bj landcuiser, plus an ARB winch bumper, 35's,lift and big whip cb, the thing looks freaking phenominal. if you put one on a stock rig i think it would look retarded, but on an off-roader it looks wicked.
