Auto Door Locks - how do I stop them?

Hello,
I recently purchased a 1991 Toyota Pickup. I love everything about this truck except for one thing: the automatic door locks that lock when I start the car and unlock when I turn it off. Can anyone tell me what I (or my friendly mechanic) can do to disengage this "safety feature"?
