blow off valve

ok I've heard of these and people talking aboutt hem all the time, and I know this is a gay question and I'll get made fun of quite a bit but what exactly does it do and what is the "sound"?

it opens to let the pressure out of the intercooler pipes. the sound is air coming out.

thanks, that actually helped so is it that noise I hear sometimes when people shift it lets out this psssst sound, lol sorry, that's the best way I could type my sound effect, I think you knwo what I mean.
