Hi Gang,

Newbie here ! Have a 99 gl v6. I need some advice ! In the past mth, repairs went like this:

1) needed a new intake gasket - fixed

2) car rides like a jeep. Had 4 new struts put in - didn't any real difference esp in the back. Rides hard as a rock still. They don't know why.

3) on the way home from getting struts, grinding sound from the left front end ... back to the garage next day

4) wheel bearing gone - fixed

5) on the way home from getting wheel bearing, hear a banging or knocking sound when turning either left or right,

6) back to the garage, replaced the strut bearing on left front, still knocking, replaced the just changed wheel bearing, still knocking, looked at all the bolts, brakes, etc ... doesn't know what the problem it.

7) abs/low traction has been coming off and on

8) and finally, have all seasons on the car sounds like it has winter studs !

Any ideas ????

Cindy

Hi Cindy

First of all i understand the intake manifold gasket is a known problem as is the wheel bearings. There seem to be a number of postings here about those problems. As for the rough ride my 2001 GLS 3.4 rode a little rough but when i replaced those 50 series tires with new ones it made all the difference in the world.
I see a number of other postings about the warning lights. Mine was doing that also during the winter but when the warmer weather showed it stopped. There is a re-set button for the Low trac / abs in the fuse box. I had mine checked out anyway & it turned out to be the right front wheel ABS sensor that had a problem. Once that was replaced i didn't have any further problems with my warning lights.
Have a look thru some of the other postings, maybe someone has posted a better solution...

they arent meant to ride rough, its part of the sportier suspension

With the 50 series tires they will ride alittle rough but not to bad it absorbes the bumps but still has a sharpness to it. I love the way it rides like that! Those warning lights (abs/trac) are probably a bad wheel bearing! I replaced my left one only to hear more noise and then i started getting warning lights like crazy! Turns out the right wheel bearing was going also but the sensor also was going bad! It would completely drop out my abs! Sometimes coming to a complete stop the brakes would acually only work about half way until it dumped the abs then almost lock up. All these problems were solved by one little wheel bearing! If you only did one side bearing the other might need it also. Some of the other noises could be the strut plate or mabey a bad CV joint.. Wish you luck please post a answer when you figure it out!

Well Cindy I don't mean to laugh but your list looks almost like my list for car problems,

My 1999 Alero GLS, 130,000 bough used has caused me so much grief.
I have replaced Tie rods(sp?),
2 sets of bearings,
Window Regulator
ABS Wheel sensors ( two front)
Water pump ( coolant leak) and I need it done again?!
Intake Manifold
I could go on...It's become a joke between me and my mechanic When I leave the shop I just say see you next week. And chances are I see him

Hello. I had this popping problem that only happens when you turn the steering wheel hard to the left or right. It happened even after replacing the new wheel bearing! The problem is the after market wheel bearings! We finally switched it out with a oem wheel bearing - problem solved. good luck.

Hey there,
I also here a noise up front once in a while, and I was just wondering how much the wheel bearing and sensors actually cost, if it will slove the problem for good, and if it is even worth replacing! wow, there's a lot in that sentence, anything will help!
Thanks,
Jordan

Wheel bearing sensor I bel.ieve is one unit. I have had my left side replaced already and I knwo I am going to be doing the right side soon.
I managed to shell out around 350 for the bearing, depending on where you go.
I don't know what noise you guys are talking about.
But I notice a big difference in my steering and on my breaking ( obviously) when it's wet out or slippy. So I suggest getting it fixed before winter weather.

I think I am having a similar problem, need some advice.

I have a 2003 alero, in good condition. I noticed the front left tire sqealing a bit when turning left and there has always been a slight pull in the wheel to the right.

I went to Belle Tire, where I have been for other stuff, trust the guys in there. They drove the car around for a minute, hooked it up to the alignment machine and found the problem. They told me the strut needed replacing, but was not urgent or a saftey issue. They showed me the tests they were doing and it showed the camber (for the front left) being off -1.8 degrees.

They told me I needed both front struts replaced. I guess this problem was caused by an accident my car was in before I had it (about a year ago I think).
I let them replace the struts, and they did a four wheel alignment.

The next day, as I was driving, I noticed a groan coming from the front left and right (mostly left) wheels. It was consistent, when going straight, turning, whatever.

I went back in to Belle Tire, and now they say it is the wheel bearings. And apparently I need both front bearings replaced, but again, not a safety issue. The estimate says its $281 with labor and parts.

I am hoping someone here has an idea of what is going on, if they caused the bearings to make this noise. It just seems suspicious that a day after the struts are replaced, the bearings make noise.

So please, if you know what I should do, let me know. I am not too excited about spending more money on my car at the moment. I payed $360 for the struts and aligment and running out of money for this. Thank you for the help (and for reading all of this!).
