I hear a whine in transmission in 2nd and third. My previous Buick, 86 lesabre had the same whine. On my 86 the whine stayed after a transmission was replaced.
Is this a torque convertor problem. If so what causes it?

Rear end? Pardon my FWD ignorance. Is there a diagram? The salvage yard said it might be the planetaries. Is this the same thing. I don't believe you mean a ring and pinion.
Thanks,
Mark

Ok I guess I'm answering my own email, but I just received by Buick Manuals, Thanks to whomever posted the site. I see in the fantastic tranmission diagrams, what looks like a rear-end planetary gear on the RHS of the transaxle.

In looking at the transmissin noise diagnosis, It passed: pump whine, and convertor whine tests. The whine only appears in 1 and 2. According to the test sheet, it could still be the planetaries, but, I wonder if the 1-2 gear assemblie ever goes bad?

my 92 lesabre whined between 2nd and 3rd and it turned out i need a new transmission. it lasted a bit with the whining then one day it would go, stop, then catch and go again.

My '92 LeSabre (same tranny) whines in 1st. I'm not worried about it. With the manufacturing tolerances they use, sometimes a planetary gearset has some whine. Not perfect, but it owrks.
