Can they actually get me for anything if...???

so here's the story...
i'm driving around with my friend following me last saturday around 8 pm. there's maybe 3 cars on the road, so i try to max my car out. i'm cruising at 105 (sad yes, but i'm broke) in the left lane of a 3 lane highway. just as i'm about to break, i see a cop in the exit ramp :eek2:. so i quickly slow down, but i was still doing about 100 as i went past him. by now i'm just waiting to get pulled over, but for whatever reason he didn't :dunno:

my question is, since he wasn't shooting radar and didn't really have any real proof that i was doing anything wrong, what charges could they bring against me if i were to get pulled over in that situation? i'm sure wreckless driving, but is there really anything else the court would listen to?

o yea...this is in Ohio

Well a cop doesn't have to shoot radar to give you a ticket. Say he pulled onto the highway right behind you and paced your speed at like 100mph, then he could pull you over and write on the ticket that he "paced" you at that given speed. Something like that is hard to fight in court.

if he didn't pace you or anything, the only thing i can think of getting you for is wreckless driving. and wreckless driving is a pretty big crime.

he definitely wasn't pacing me seeing as how he was in the right lane getting off the freeway, but the wreckless thing is what i was really worried about

He can write you a speeding ticket just on sight. Alot of times, if they do, and you are speeding in excessive speeds, they will right you a ticket for like 27 miles over the speed limit. That way it isn't 30mph, so you don't lose your license, but they get you pretty bad. This has happened to me, the cop was going the other direction, but when he pulled me over and said he clocked me at 83 I knew he was lying because when I saw him I was doing around 110. Radar and whatnot are extra evidence they can use in court, but the law allows the cop to just write you a ticket on sight.

yes that is true, cops are allowed to judge speed with their eyes and right speeding tickets. Although im sure you could fight it in court and say something like well you cant properly judge the speed and distance of an object at night especially when its a pair if bright headlights headed towards you, hence the reason for all the dead deer on the road.

   sorry, found that pretty funny. not everyday you see somebody say they were going faster than what it said on the ticket.

I didn't tell it to him, I denied speeding at all actually. I said I really didn't think I was going that fast. I was really respectful, but wouldn't admit to it. It is also a known training ground for new highway patrol cops, so it's a highly ticketed area(which I now know). But I guess he was rather new, because it seemed he really didn't know what to say after I wouldn't admit to it. After a little bit, he noticed that I had the automatic shoulder belt on, but not the lap belt. He pointed that out to me, and said I thougth the shoulder belt was enough. He educated me, then wrote me a $20 ticket for the seatbelt. 10 times I've been pulled over, and that is the only ticket that I have had stick.

ok on xmas about 2 a.m. i was goin 60 in a 40. There was only one other car on the road and that hapend to be a cop going in the other direction. He pulled a quick u turn. I also have a radar detector. anyway, as soon as i saw him i hit my brakes, then he croused behinde me for aobut 1/2 a mile then pulled me over. My radar detector did not even go off. He got my speed by eye sight and he was damn stright, he was gannna make the ticket for 58. Then he just let me go after a 15 talk. Iv been pulled over twice now and still no ticket yet so im happy.

If he didnt issue you a ticket, you aren't getting one. Although I do believe he could, but I'm not 100% sure. Being off duty and in his personal car, could affect it, but I don't believe it would. Look at it this way, if an off-duty cop sees a crime being commited, he can arrest you for it. However, the question would be, does he really want to waste his personal time writing you a ticket if you weren't really endangering others. Basically, I'm guessing he just wanted to scare you into slowing down. Chances are you aren't getting one. Next time though, please check the dates of the threads and don't bring old ones back to life.
