Im about to get a 240sx very soon. The person is selling for me for 1450 about 128k and manual. The only person i saw so far is that the speedmeter doesn't work. It jumps back and forth. Is that a big problem and can it be repair easily and cheap?

What year? The miles may not be accurate if the speedo is acting like that.

Check to see if you have a little plug dangling around by the tranny =P
If you are plugged in try cleaning it off.

it could be a lot of things. Maybe he tried working on the gauge and screwed up the sensor or it could the sensor with the tranny or it could just be an electrical issue.

I would say you have a 75% chance of being able to repair it for almost nothing. If you can check the plug your self. Start on the tranny and see if it's even there, if you can squirm under there I think it is visible. (this would tops cost you 5 bucks to get a steel wool pad and maybe some cleaner.. clean the plug off if it's dirty)

If you take it to a mechanic, you'll have to pay like $100 just for him to inspect it, at which point he will either rip you off and say you need a new rear axle or something, or he will be honest and fix it for almost nothing.

Pretty much worst case scenario (and almost totaly unlikely), you would have to buy new gauges and have them installed. Even that shouldn't be more than $500 to have a mechanic do. (consideribly less if you can do it.)

I would strongly recomend you try to correct it your self, there is a good chance you can fix it your self in less than 15 minutes.

Jack your car up on the right front side, squirm in there and locate your transmission, it's the big metal thing that comes after the engine. Half way up the transmission, and about 6-10 inches from where it connects to the engine there should be a small 1/2 inch diameter plug, It normaly has a black rubber cover over it, 2 wires come out of it and go to a small black box that has a fuse in it, the wires then will leave the box and go out of view. First check to see if the plug is even there, if it is there see if it's sticking out (if so push it in) if not, you can try to remove it and clean it off. take a look at the wires, make sure they are not cut or severed, or if there is any other damage. Seriously, don't break the plug, that won't do you any good. If it still acts funny, either ignore it if it's not that bad, or pay some one else to do it.

That's all off of my 90' MT.

Good luck,

Oh make sure to put the break on BEFORE you jack it up. And make sure your jack doesn't suck.
