I have a 92 MR2 and it has the standard engine. I would like to replace it with a turbo engine and start modifications to the car, but I am not sure where to start. Does the turbo engine fit the motor mounts or will I need to do major work to change it? I would appreciate any input on mods for this car. Thanks:flash:

Check out www.mr2.com and www.toyturbo.com as there is quite a bit of info on both sites. Also might wanna check out MR2 Forum at: www.board.mr2faq.com although some of the people can kinda get snippy at times. I don't personally know of anyone who's done the conversion, but I believe the n/a car has just a non turbo version of the 3S-GTE, but I could be wrong. Good luck :flash:

The non-turbo engine is a 2.2L and the turbo is very different. It is a 2.0L engine which can also be found in celica all-tracs (90-93). An engine swap is very expensive, too because it also involves a new CPU and a tranny to match the engine.

What would be the best way to find a good used 3sgte engine and tranny? Any Ideas on how much it would cost? I would have a lot of work done on the engine, but I am not sure what I would need to have done to the tranny. I also will need a new wiring harness. Would the regular turbo computer be fine or would I need a performance computer upgrade if I got the turbo engine to do a swap? Does the turbo engine have different mounts also? Would it be more feasible to try and buy a turbo Mr2 or go ahead and do the swap since I am wanting to stock it anyway?? Thanks!!:sun:

You will save yourself a ton of time and money if you just sold your car and bought a turbo mr2. With the amount of money it would cost to complete the swap plus the price of your car, you could buy a nice turbo and have the engine rebuilt and possibly have money left over for mods, maybe even an upgraded turbo. I have a non-turbo and I'm planning on buying a turbo when I have the money for a somewhat low-mileage black one.

Amen to the above post! Sell it and buy the turbo car you want. Better yet, shop around, take your time, and buy one with the aftermarket goodies you want. There are always guys willing to sell their hot cars for a big loss. You will never get the >$3000 it will cost, and more importantly, you will never get back the year or so of your life you will waste doing it.

in the north america, we received 2 engines in the mr2.
the turbo has the 2.0L 3sgte
the na has the 2.2L 5sfe (also found in the camry of those years)

overseas (japan, uk, etc), the na had the 2.0L 3sge, a later generation of which is found in the jdm altezza (is200).

i believe brandonthomas on the mr2 board has done an na -> jspec 3rd gen 3sgte engine swap. there are a lot of threads on the topic over there.

and i wouldn't necessarily go for an already modded car, unless you really don't want to customize it yourself. there is a greater likelihood that the car has been abused or had some problems. if you can find a stock or near stock example in good condition, i'd jump on that over a heavily modded on any day.
