97RS starting prob.

hey guys

my girlfriends 97 3.8L has a hard time startin' when the engine is cold.. It has to turn over 6 or 7 times before it'l fire up... But if the engine is hot, it'l start right up.. Anyone come across this problem before? any ideas as to where to start?

have I even stumped even the most knowledgable of the AF regulars?? or is it so obvious that you choose not to answer??

umm, maybe the battery is goin bad, or something in the electrical system

I have a 96 with the 3.8. I had a similar isuue. It took several tank fulls of fuel injector cleaner, but now starts right up when cold or hot. i now add a bottle of fuel injector cleaner every time I fill up. Might be worth a try.

had the same problem w/ my 89 fire chicken. changed the battery, cleaned the terminals, and it works great. good luck w/ that

could be any number of things. check the spark plugs and wires, check your battery amps (cold and hot), and maybe try an induction service.

Anyways, thanks for the info guys! Ive got er' booked for a fuel system service.. I'll check the battery.. I know its weak... I didnt know it'd cause that though

yeah weak batteries will have enough power to crank, but may not build up enough voltage in the coil to fire the cylenders.

Now she's all pumped to go shopping for a new battery...

SHe wanted a K&N intake for her car and he was bein a smartass about it.. He's like.. why waste your time? Then when he couldnt find it he's like.. they dont make one for the 3.8 theyre not worth it

I had almost the exact same prolem and it turned out to be my distributor. When i got a new one not only did i notice a difference is starting but my car ran smoother and performed a little better.
