I think i am going to sell my 97 m3. I will miss it so much but the tranny may be crapping out on me and i am tierd of te fussy maintenance. I like the price of the wrx but the sti is so pimp. Before i look into American muscle, I wanted to hear some opinions. What are the stock quater mile and 0-60 times. What are common mods and how much power? How much do they cost? referring to both models. It seems pretty hard to find the Sti used, anyone know where to look? (other then the obvious)

How hard woudl it be to amke the wrx look similar to an sti? I keep hearing about the tranny probs. Is this somehting to worry about if i start to drag race the car? Anyone take their cars to a drap strip or road course?

I drag race my wrx and yes, the wrx 5-speed will become a problem. The replacement options forit will be quite expensive, no less than $1500 for parts at lowest ive seen and no less than $4500 for everything with a 6-speed ive seen. If you have the cash, go for the sti, it will save you time, money, and a headache. WRX will also run a 14.3 in 1/4 at best with a 0-60 in about 5.3 secs while an STi runs 13.2 and 0-60 in 4.8 i believe. corection?
WRX's arent made for drag strip racing in general so expect broken parts over time, mostly from drivetrain.

STI with a good launch will pull a 12.8

Well, what about an Sti for drag strip racing? Seeing that the cars are very similar wouldn't it have the same probs. Because drag strip or no drag strip driving an awd cars hard like that is going to cause probs. Wouldn't u agree? Also what are common mods that people are putting on engine wise? are they real expensive?

The WRX and STI are only similar in body style, the whole transmission from the engine back is completely different.
What makes you assume that drag racing an AWD will cause problems?

If an awd car is properly driven it takes a beating when launching the car. The tires don't spin but the driveline takes that pressure. The wrxs' are known to have common transmission problems due to this. Many people say they can drive their car like a pro but how many really can>?

Well, which do you want to know about, the STI or the WRX.
Yes, the WRX has the weaker transmission and yes if you continuously launch it hard it will eventually give up. The same goes for any car though.
The STI has better internals overall, if you want to strip race it it'll survive better.

One thing, the STI will be better on a road course where it's meant to excel, why not consider something made for straight line?

I hate to say this, but if all you're going to do is drag race, get a Ford Mustang SVT Cobra. The interior is made out of plastic, and the steering feels like that of a Kia Rio, but there is no denying the unbelievable straight-line power...honestly though, if you can sacrifice a little bit of straight-line speed, just get the STi for a few thousand less and have a much nicer, very well-built car that also steers and handles almost as well as the M3.

lol everything ive seen, read and talked to other wrx owners at the strip have had problems with the drivetrain while drag racing. I have as well and i dont launch anywhere near 7 grand. My tranny is fine but the cheap and brittle stock clutch flywheel went to hell. I had to buy a custom from Spec that will handle in the 400 hp range. The STi drive train and the WRX drivetrain are completely different, its apple to oranges. The STi is made to handle big power, WRX isnt. You could try to race the WRX at the strip but i guarentee after a year if you do it often you'll break the tranny, a shaft, clutch, flywheel, or differential. take a pick but one will go.
