i have just purchased a used apexi bov the noise is ok but the problem is the poping noise from my exhaust. when i first got it there was no problem its been a couple days now and noticed there was more boost and not much turbo lag but its eating up a lot of gas and when i switch gears theres a pop outta my exhaust. i think the combustion timing is off or somethin. just wanna kno if i can fix it by tuning the bov pressure setting the screw u can turn with an allen wrench. please help. thx.

Your BOV can not increase boost, so there is not boost.
Your exhaust is popping becuase of running rich, from the bOV.

The OEM vavle is the BEST performing valve you could possible have.
All other valves are expensive noise makers that rob performance and gas mileage.

dude, email me at grue0038@umn.edu and i'll show you how to get rid of the popping between shifts. it's really easy.

the majority of the MR2 community is just gung ho about the stock valve. truth is, there's nothing wrong with aftermarket valves if they're set up properly. the bypass feature? don't you think if the bypass feature was so uber-important to toyota engineers, they would have placed it closer to the tb so the engine didn't still have to try to breathe through the second largest restriction in the intake tract (the intercooler)? just how much "performance" do you think that's worth?

scarecrowX, the tone of your post says a lot.

You want to tell "the truth".
The truth is, there is no aftermarket valve that will give you more performance than the OEM unit.

So why waste money on one?

As for how much performance do I think it's worth? I think my performance numbers speak for themselves.

There is only one aftermarket valve that shares the OEM's air-based design and that lacks the by-pass feature. All of the spring-type BOVs are inherently flawed. They have only a limited range function.

how can i stop my engine from running rich and does a recirculating bov that recirculates back into the intake better than the one i have now? i guess its not more boost but seems like turbo is spooling up faster like around 2300 rpm and not much turbo lag but the gas is killin me cause in san francisco its expensive here

There are several reasons you could be running rich.

1. You are blowing off air the was metered by the AFM. Re-circulating cures that.

2. If your valve is opening under boost, which is highly probable, then you are blowing out metered air again.

3. Your gas mileage will also suffer from not having the by-pass feature of the OEM valve. No aftermarket valve offers that feature.

** side note, I have some healthy horsepower coming out of my car and I regularly get over 24 mpg. My car is tuned and I do use the OEM valve.

I got rid of the AFM, so my OEM valve is vented to atmosphere so I have the "noise". You should only do this if you have a VPC or stand alone engine management.

would u recommend any aftermarket bov that has almost the same feature as an OEM valve but not have as much drawback as the apexi bov.

There is one that HKS makes (not sure which model).
It has the exact same air design as the OEM unit, so it responds just as fast and recirculates air ... it only lacks the by-pass feature (which is the least to be worried about).

the HKS one is the same style as stock, but uses a 2 part opening, and thus reacts faster.

the "truth" is, you are basing performance on a bpv, which is an inherently flawed argument in itself.

As for how much performance do I think it's worth? I think my performance numbers speak for themselves.

as do vince F's. i believe he is #1 on the 1/4 mile registry and i distinctly see in his engine bay an apex valve- the very one you're saying isn't capable of the same performance as yours.

anyway, that's beside the point. the point is, he ALREADY spent the money on one. i'm here to tell him there IS a way to make it work, even with the stock electronics.

Now that is great point.
Because someone already spent the dollars on an inferior product, you are offering to help them make it less inferior. How noble of you. I would rather help them do things for the best performance.
That's just me.

Vince has a race car.
I have a street car that sees a variety of racing venues.

I am sure Vince could care less about the by-pass function since he only drives at WOT and would never use it.

I am sure Vince could care less about the spring only being ideal at a certain PSI since he races at a specific PSI. It's not like he needs it to sometimes open at 10 psi and other times at 35 psi.

Now if the original poster is indeed building a dedicated drag car,
I stand corrected and I apologize for not allowing for that possiblity.

is the hks one the super sequential?

wow jek, you're right. the rest of the automotive community could not possibly know what they're talking about...

*rolls eyes*

since my points are still valid, i'll just leave it at that.

Mr2_bOi, I believe it is the super sequential.
Just make sure the one your buying doesn't have a spring in it and you'll be fine.

im sry but another prob jsut came up. i put back my OEM valve back on last night and noticed that the hose on the right of the white circular part of valve is broken the clamp took the red piece and stuck onto the hose but now my apexi intake is not making the sucking noise as much as it use to and the exhaust is not as loud as it use to be and the car is still running rich noticing from the poping outta my exhuast. The biggest problem of all is that when i shut off my car letting the turbo timer shut it off i heard a sucking noise around the turbo and then a spraying noise it sounded like somethin was flooded or somethin it kept on makin the noise until the car was cooler. also noticed oil around the turbo and the linen hoses b/t the turbo and the intake also the exhaust manifold? but pls help
