ok, the power button makes my camry more powerful.... but does that mean a faster acceleration or what, and, if you could, how does the power button affect the engine and what not in technical terms, does it use more gas to have it on all the time?

I use mine for city driving. It gives a bit more oomph off the line. Mines only a I4 so it needs that extra get up and go. The dealership I got my camry from said it delayed the shift on the automatic

The ECT button delays the upshifts on the transmission to provide better acceleration when you are in normal traffic. It will cost you some gas mileage.
As far as the effect on the engine goes, it has very little or no effect. Just allows the engine to rev higher before the transmission shifts.

No, not the overdrive button on the shifter. Both my former 87 and 92 Camrys had a transmission power button located on the shifter gate. Merely had to push the button to go to either POWER or NORMAL. My new 03 doesn't have this feature and I miss it.

Well that sucks, I don't have one on my '99. :( That really sucks, makes me want to go and get a older model Camry just to say that I've got me one of those cool power buttons too.

1993 Camry LE V6, normally, with the power button off, it has pretty good acceleration, but with it on, it makes it be able to do more than unneccessarily fast accel. on green lights.

The Power Button on next to the gear shift changes the gear ratio so that more torque is generated. However, in doing this too many times you can ware our your engine belt faster and also stress the engine. This will result in a reduced fuel economy. But like you said. "I love my power button" It is fun to hit it and pretend you have nitro and pass the guy next to you at a high speed. The thing is you have to think about the consequences.
Over Drive button on the gear shifter just puts the car into a lower gear than it should be in so that you can get better control of the car and increased acceleration. It is mainly ment for climbing on a steady uphill. I.E. Freeway, or a long road.
I am a newbie at cars and I do have a question also... Do any of you know how to replace the brake light at the back of a 96 V6 XLE Toyota Camry. Im looking all over the internet and cant find a site. I have a basic idea of how to do it but want a detailed description on replacing the button. Thanks for your help guys. Hopefully the information i provided helps you.

Do any of you know how to replace the brake light at the back of a 96 V6 XLE Toyota Camry.
Pull the trunk liner loose from around the socket. There are a couple of nuts that must be removed and then the tail-light assembly can be removed by pivoting it outward from the side the nuts freed up, then whack it sideways with your hand to dislodge the assembly from the side of the car. Reverse for assembly.

The easy way: Skip to the switch test below and replace the ECT (Pattern Select Switch) switch if it fails.
The hard way:
Turn on the ignition switch and measure the voltage between terminal "P" of the ECM and body ground. When the ECT switch is in the PWR position, the voltage should be 10-14 V. When the ECT switch is in the NORM position, the voltage should be less than 1 V.
If the above test fails, disconnect the ECT connector (Pry up on rear of shifter cover - one clip on each side near rear). The switch connector should show the following resistances:
Looking at the connector side of the switch with the flat side down, check the leftmost and rightmost terminal on the bottom.
in PWR position - continuity
In NORM position - no continuity
If this fails, replace the Pattern Select Switch
If the first test passes, I have no clue. Probably ECM and not worth fixing.
If the first test (Terminal P) fails and the ECT switch passes, then check the harness and connector between battery and pattern select switch, the pattern select switch connector, and the harness between the pattern select switch and the ECM.
In case I wasn't clear: ECT switch = Pattern Select Switch (Toyota name)
