Is there a right and wrong way to downshift?

Reving high in a gear and then downshift is a bad way of downshifting :nono:

Well you dont have to downshift just pressing the clutch and putting it into a lower gear, then releasing the clutch.
An example, my civic si makes 60 mph in 2nd gear, if im at 40 mph in 4rth gear, i press the clutch, with the clucth pressed i rev my engine to around 5500 rpm and then release it with 2nd gear on. This is a better way so you dont feel the engine making a rough change and just having smooth acceleration.
There is another way that is better, putting gear into neutral then matching the engine speed, then putting it into geat...but its too slow for me.
