Insurance?

Does automobile insurance allow for turbocharged/NOS?
I have a friend who've a turbo-charaged Subaru WRX coupe, and he was telling me how his insurance company gave him a hard time initially.
I believe that models like Eclipse GS-T is turbo from the factory, are insurance companies more likely to accept models like GS-T(factory set turbo) over say, a Eclipse(non-turbo) and then you install NOS/Turbo?
Do you have to pay extra, and if so, how much more?

yes turbo cars are more expensive for insurance... although nitrous affects nothing and has nothing to do with the rates of you insurance!!! there is quite a big difference in a turboed cars insurance compared to a non turboed car! and it also depends on the year of the car, price, age of the owner! all that stuff but it is more expensive!

whoa...can you give me a rough estimate here? Like a $100 more?
so... Nitrous will NOT affect insurance rates??

In this case, you got a stock GST? Or was yours a GS that you had modified to a GST?
I'm wondering if a GST(from factory) will cost more than say, a GS that has been modified to a GST later on.
If I'm gonna get serious about a Turbo car... I have to consider insurance :p

but the question is how many tickets does your friend have! if he doesnt have any then he is getting ripped the fuck off!!! and does he have a loan on the car... there are a lot of things that come into play when you are dealing with insurance!

For my 91 escort, 96 mercury mystique, and the GSX, I pay 511 per year each. They dont charge me any more for the GSX than the other cars. I'm 26, and have a couple tickets. My tow vehicle on the other hand, 99 1 ton dually quad cab turbo deisel, I pay nearly 1200 for the year, with full coverage. My payment for this month is 820 BTW, which really pisses me off. But then its only 250 a month for the next 8 months. Insurance is a huge ripoff. There is no method to the madness, and they're all a bunch of crooks ;)

I hear that insurance for drivers under 25 are charged more because they're "higher risk" or something like that, so you're probably getting the discount?

yea insurence is higher for under 25 IF they're listed as the primary driver. i get out for now because we have 2 cars and 3 drivers in my family so i'm not listed as primary for any of them

I live in MASS, and get insurance with metlife. I never got any discount when I turned 25. The only discounts I remmeber were at 3 and 5 years experience, so 19 and 22, repsectively. Other state may be different though. I do remember that first discount was good for 800 a year though. I had the Rx7 back then and was paying 4 grand a year for it.

maybe you shoudl have got a cheaper car to start driving with. Also you on your own insurance quick street car. I'm 19 and with a GS spyder It would be 3900 on my own insurance (no accidents or anything) But thats like full insurance.
I'm switching over to my dads though and on the family plan it's only 2100 a year (175/month). I'd recommend switching to the family plan it's much cheaper if your parents will let you. the only problem was the car has to be in my dads name then.
I originally and still have a cavalier from the time I was 16 - now It was a 93 cavalier dirt cheap to insure though. I'm just about to ditch it for the gs spyder though. I'm not saying the gst is wrong for you it just seems rediculous to pay that for insurance when you could be saving on your parents.

Thats a big difference! Makes me wonder why my 91 POScort Pony Edition and GSX are both 500 a year. Wonder if its beacause of my discounts (record), insurance company, state, or because they dont have collision. Hmm.
nova1313
05-04-2004, 09:34 AM
prolyl the no collision. If I dropped collision on it it was like 500 - 600 cheaper. I also have a 100 dollar deductable and I pay for that too.

Wow...I thought I had it bad. I pay about $850/year for my GS-T (and I do have collision with a $250 deductible). I had 11 points about 4 years ago and my insurance never went up. Back to the original post for a second, if you turbo an N/T you don't have to tell the insurance company about the turbo.

Really? And if by some chance, you get into an accident, the insurance company won't bail out or something 'cause you turboed a non-turbo AND you didn't let them know?

you have to read your pollicy. some insurance companys dont cover anything but stock parts. it depends on the insurance company. for instance, when i was 21 i has someone rip off 4g's of equipment in my car, Statef arm covered everything, all i had to do is go down to their claim office and have a claims ajuster with a copy of the police report and let them go over my car for about an hour and see if i was trying to scam them. after that, the told me to go down to Cartoys and talk with the insurance manager and get a replaicment quote. my equipment was 2 or 3 years old, but he wrote me up what new exact replacement would be on all stuff. i paid like 700 for the stuff i had, and got a check for almost 4 grand. but this new insurance company i have intagon from Gmac insurance, yeah, they suck dick. they wont even cover a cd player. unless you pay like some unreal amount of unessary insurance for every item you have aftermarket. and they still dont replace "video equipment" ps2, tv, dvd, navigation, exc. insurance, is just flat out GAY..

Um...no...mine is a factory GS-T. As far as I know from talking to my insurance company, any aftermarket parts installed on the vehicle are covered under my insurance. I guess this has to do with the vehicle being restored to "pre-accident condition" I guess that if you had some exorbitant amount of money invested (let's say $10,000) in parts you should let them know. It's just like if you had an older vehicle that you restored...you don't have to itemize all of the parts, normally they just ask you for the condition of the vehicle (poor, fair or good). This is what they did when I got my '74 mustang ghia.

i just told my place the estimated value of aftermarket parts that i wanted insured. i embelished a little bit, and i got a deductable of like 800 bucks [mabey 1000, don't remember] to keep the premiums down. i'm scared to see what it is going to be when i renew in a couple of weeks!

I bought my '97 GSX when I was 19, lived alone, no financial help. Premium was ~$1850/six months ($310/month) with a perfect, clean record, driving since the day I turned 16 (over 3 years ago, at the time).
Fortunately, when I turned 20, it dropped to $215/month (~$1400/six months). Now, I'm still 20, and still taking it in the ass for my GSX. :) Hell, my car payments are only $198! My only saving grace is my perfect credit rating. Keeps interest low (4.25% on the car, 4 more years of payments). =D
That said, I'm supposed to drop down to $140-something per month when I turn 21, which is in 3 months, which is also around the time I will have paid off my student loans. I can't freaking wait. =D
Bottom line: it's worth it. ;)
(P.S. I live in Oregon, and I use Farmers. For me, they are consistently about $20-$50 cheaper than all competition per month.)

I know what you mean quickstreetcar. I've been working since 14 also. I'm getting my second car now. Pay for insurance and everything. It gives you a sense of accomplishment. I just waited to get the eclipse since I wanted a spyder and insurance would have killed me then. I didn't end up getting promoted to a supervisor till I was 18. The extra pay allowed me to get the car and pay the rediculous insurance ^^
It's really hard to claim 4k or more. If you ever did I should think the next years rates would go through the roof. Yanno those "standard" increases ^^
