My little friend (1.6 liter, 16 v, automatic) takes along time getting out of first gear and into second.

Oddly it seems to vary with the air temp., the colder the air the longer it takes to shift.

first check your trany level ,cold , should be between the lower two dots on the dip stick , engine running in park.If thats not ok you should check for leaks , if there are no leaks. then check the modulator valve they can some times develop a leak in the diaphram and draw the trany fluid into the manifold and then the engine burns it up .

my 95 did the the same thing , i had to have it rebuilt , you can try changing the filter and having the trans flushed , but i think you are going to have to pull it and rebuild
