AFM 7mgte swap

I started about 3 months ago with a thrown rod on my 86.5 mk3 supra (n/a of course)...this was self inflicted as I had bought it about a week before and was unaware that it was rapidly burning oil. I'd only been out driving twice with my brother (no license then, just permit) and on the way home it died. Starting it back up, there was a horrible sound...rod knocking...ouch. I now have a 7mgTe mostly installed, which i bought for $810 from an import company (which supposedly has about 30k miles on it) and had installed by a friend and his dad (mechanics) helping along the way. Well, now I'm down to waiting for the last few parts to get here (mainly the new HKS downpipe) but today I came to a horrible realization. The turbo Air Flow Meter does not take the same wiring harness...I don't have the clip... I was wondering if there is any way to simply replace this clip with a turbo one...rewiring it, or if i'm just totally screwed (new ECU and whatnot).
thanks

(BTW, I used the NA wiring harness, expected problems, but i'm a newby, didn't expect so many. had no idea from the start...WHY DID NOBODY TELL ME? (lol))

You have to use the turbo harness, with the same year (87-88, 89, or 90-92) Turbo ECU and turbo sensors on the engine. Some have done the Half-N/A-T (turbo'd n/a engine) but it's absloutly pointless because our cars came with an easy to find turbo option. Harnesses/ECU's/sensors are always for sale and for pretty cheap. Don't waste your money on the HKS POS downpipe, it bottlenecks down to a 2.5" flex section. There are atleast 15 DP's out now from various places for the CT-26, most all 3" straight through, all pretty decent quality and price.

.....all i can say is...ow...that really really hurts. I think i'm already screwed into the hks downpipe. ok, i've already dropped about $2000 on this project, not including the 1500 that the car cost in the first place. I'm only 16 years old and all I REALLY need is a running car to get to work, I don't really plan on dogging it out or anything. I need it to run ASAP so what was that you said about a half and half deal. I think for now I NEED to do that, I'm out of money, and I still owe my mom 700$. i've looked at about 50 junkyards in this area and within a 50 mile radius, and i can't find a SINGLE turbo mk3 supra. the only problem i see that's left is the afm, everything else as far as i know works fine.
thanks again

I just realized, by "turbo'd n/a" do you mean to just leave the turbo not hooked up? that's how i currently have it so i could get it home and to the muffler shop to get custom intercooler pipes made. Do you know of ANY way to POSSIBLY rewire? or...does the ecu read completely different signals from the n/a and turbo AFM's?

No, by turbo'd N/A I mean they turbo a 7m-ge, turbo, IC, n/a distributor, n/a flapper door, lame IMO. If you can't afford to do the whole turbo swap, which shouldn't cost any more than $1500 (with an engine and trans) in the first place, then you shouldn't be doing it because you won't be able to fix something when it breaks. I wouldn't get any IC pipes from a muffler shop, there going to be crush bent and therefore bottlenecks if you ever upgrade down the road. They will be "slightly" better than the stock peices but if you want real HP you'll want good pipes. If you just want it to run between work and back then you can put your n/a exhaust and intake, flapper door, and distributor on the turbo engine. Effectively making it a low compression n/a, maybe 175hp. The ECU's are completely different, the wiring harness' are very different, the sensors are different, the AFM is different, the CPS/distributor is different, the list goes on and on. So what I'm saying is if you want to get from A to B then take everything off your n/a engine and put it on your turbo engine, if you want to do it right find the parts I've listed and everything else you need to do a complete turbo swap and swap it. Search ebaymotors.com, search supraforums.com (MKIII parts for sale sections), some people are even parting out Turbo MKIII's on this forum. Just remember if you get a wiring harness you have to get the ECU from the same year group like I said. Do you have any pics of the engine before you put it in so I or you can figure out what year it was?

Well, no pics. The company I got the motor from was retarded and couldn't tell me a year, and everyone there speaks horrible english so there is a huge language barrier. When we called to ask about any other turbo parts they might have they ended up calling me a "dum dum", so no help there. We actually did have to put my na distributor on b\c of the wiring harness. How exactly can you tell what year group it's from? Oh, and the reason i need IC pipes from the muffler shop is that i didn't get ANY pipes with the motor OR the intercooler, so it's not that i'm trying to upgrade, just trying to get it functional. The wiring harness that came with the motor had been completely sliced off and many of the sensors were broken.

ok, so i've decided to just do it right no matter how much longer it takes. Just let me know how to tell the difference between the years of motors so I can start ordering\finding the parts I need
thanks

Good choice, you'll be much happier in The long run spending alittle more now, and losing a huge headache later. Since you said most of the sensors are broken then you don't have to worry about what year the engine was, just try and find someone parting out a turbo car and buy everything you need, if the price is right of coarse. I've covered everything you need to complete the swap on this forum, but I'll list it for you since your willing to put in the effort. This should be everything minus the block and parts you should have gotten with a JDM engine.
- Turbo tachometer (N/A will work if you change out a resistor, too much work for $5 IMO)
- Turbo ECU and wiring harness (87-88, 89, or 90-92) Some say 89+, but 89 was the transitional year so it should be treated as it's own group. Also auto/manual ECU depending on what transmission you have, auto ECU will work with both automatic and manual trans but the manual ECU will not.
- Ignitor/coil pack
- AFM
- HAC sensor (87-88 ECU/harness only)
- Oil cooler, piping, and brackets
- Intercooler, piping, and brackets
- Transmission, for now you probably want to stick with the n/a 5-speed (W-58), if you ever want more than 350hp though you'll want to get the turbo 5-speed (R-154). If you swap to a R-154 you'll need the trans mount and drive shaft with it also.
Who did you end up buying the engine from? Sounds like they have some crappy service, I wouldn't be surprised if the engine had BHG, it's happened to others before from places like that.

I got the motor from a company called Japanese Imports Engine Sales. We checked with the Dallas Better business Bearu and they checked out clean. I just realized, I accidently said that the sensors were broken, what i meant was that many of the clips on the harness were broken.
as of now, I have the following
-coil pack
-afm
-intercooler w/bracket and home made bracket
...and then i don't have the rest...probably giong to end up driving to waco to find a turbo model and get the rest of the stuff.
Umm, what is the HAC sensor? (and where is it located)
I looked through my Haynes book but there is no mention as far as i could find.

High Altitude Compensation sensor, it should be just under the glove box, even says "HAC" on it. Hmm, never heard of JIE Sales, so there in dallas but they can't speak english, weird? Before you go driving half way across the state have you tried ebaymotors? I just looked and theres a few Turbo parts cars and a few harness and ECU's for sale. Good luck on finding the parts though.

ehhhh, it's ONLY 90 miles...lol, yeah, looked last night but didn't want to buy the ecu till I got a response, also, i don't want to get a harness and then not be able to get an ecu from the same year, or vice versa...i'd really like to get all the crap off the same car, that way i KNOW. anyway thanks for all the help man, If i need anymore i'll be back...so i'll be back soon. ACTUALLY i already need to know something else, do you know of a site that has a guide for converting my tach...see, I already bought the indiglow for the guages...
