Wheel To Tyre Width???

What is the max width tyre to fit to 17x9" rims??
They currently have 255s and I would like to fit 285s if poss, can I go wider??

I have the same car, R32 GTR and wheel dimensions 17" X 9 also with 255's all around. They come close to the guards but not honestly sure they will clear the rear guards or not. It will be bloody close. If your car is lowered I doubt it.

Can i ask why you would want to put 285's on 9"rim??? I personally like a thinner tyre around my wheels. I currently got 17"x8" with 215/45 rubber all way round my 180. If i were you i would look at 235/40 or 235/45 rubber. Less side wall flex, less likely to aqua plain. Evryone to their own tho.

Niz180 the main reason for my wide rubber buzz is that fat feet look, I just find wide tyres look really staunch!! Like you say though..."each to there own", Cheers man.

If I am reading this correctly you say that a lower profile tyre that is actually wider will aqua plane less? If that is what you're stating then that is wrong becase a wider tyre will aqua plane easier not the other way around. A skinner tyre will cut through the water much more effeciently but have much less side wall strength and a smaller contact patch which is not good for overall handling. Hence the reasons people who like to go to the tracks put the widest tyre they can fit on their cars for traction and handling.

I think you have misunderstood what i am saying. Lets take a 17"x8" rim for example, you put 255/45 tyres on and see how big the buldge is. Compare that to a 215/45 tyre stretched over the same 17"x8" rim which will be much stiffer hence me saying less side wall flex. I'm not saying that a skinnier tyre will handle better, I'm saying that if you want fat rubber your rim should be sized accordingly.

On an 8" rim you should be able to go to 245's with out having any buldging effect and gain maximum sidewall strength. On a 9" rim 285's may be pushing it a bit but my 255's just make the outside of the rim. I can still scrap the wheel easily. Also the wider you go and the lower the profile the stronger the sidewalls become. Sidewall construction has come a long way in performance tyres.

Point taken. But what i'm saying is keeping the existing profile and going to a skinnier width. e.g going from a 235/45 to a 215/45 I have done this and noticed better steering response and less aqua plain. I guess it comes down to what you want out of the car. I for one like a very responsive feel to the steering thus is why i went to a skinnier tyre.

NIZ180, I looked at doing the same thing as well. But I was told by a experienced race suspension guy, that if you strech the sidewall too much and then you hit a large bump or pot hole the sidewall could give away and tire will dismount.

Different tires are also made differently with different sidewall designs, so some 245's will have square corning blocks when stretched some will have rounded ones...

Just something to keep in mind ok.

FYI - I have 255/40/17's on my 17x9's
