Football (American rules) is dumb. The same goes for most team sports. What's with all the padding and helmets and whatnot? And why does it seem like anyone in the nfl doesn't live past 55?

Football is dumb. And it's as boring as Nascar to watch. There's like 15 seconds of action, then everybody's in groups again, another 15 seconds of action, and then everybody's back in groups again - and so it continues. Wow, they carry a funny looking ball around a field - yah, that's really fun to watch. It should be called carryball, seeing as how the name "Football" doesn't describe it in anyway, they don't move the ball with their feet, the ball isn't made out of a foot, so why call it football? :)

I can think of far more boring sports to watch, golf and baseball are prime examples. Anything where people are getting thrown around, pads or not, is exciting to me. I must say though, Rugby looks far more entertaining to me. And you gotta love Hockey. :D

It has to be 15 seconds, any longer and they would forget what they were doing and the whole game would have to be aborted. It's called having a short attention span.....amongst other things.....

Hey fellas..I gotta say, I play football and I am offended!

Not really, but there is a lot more to football than running around getting hit. And I have no idea why its called football, maybe cause you need a foot (kickoff) to start the game. Thats my best guess. As for the 15 seconds, each play doesnt need to be longer than 15 seconds.

And Boss San: Try playing football with no pads and no helmet. You think not living past 55 is bad? Few would make it past 25.

Well like alot of sports (except Hockey, which is hard because it requires you to iceskate), it's funner to play than it is to watch. However, I do consider baseball funner to watch than football. I like basball, because it's the odd one out.
Hockey, Football, Soccer, all you do is move an object to one end of a field. In baseball, you hit that object into the air, and run in circles.

I agree, i think its the actual stadium experience, rather than the sport. Chillin, eating peanuts or hot dogs at a baseball game or doin the wave at a football game is just too much fun. Even if the game/team sucks.

so you guys are trying to say football is easy? lol oh man, you guys dont know how bad it feels to be chase by 300 pounds man..and this is just high school! why not go and work out with a football team in ur high school (if ur still in school) then u will c how hard it is ;)

I think some sports you have to have played to appreciate them on TV. I can watch skiing or soccer (in Spanish, no less) and be perfectly happy, while my friends slip into comas. I don't understand how anyone can find football boring, though. It's got action, strategy, violence, hot cheerleaders...

Chavez408
05-02-2004, 07:47 PM
yea thats what i ment rsx-s777, ur right! u got to play the sport to appreciacte it. For ex i know damn well i wont make it in soccer, because its all running! and im not a runner, Im a big guy. Thats why i give all the soccer player so much points cuz it takes guts to do all that running, and i know most of them cant take a hit from other 300 pound guys, so they give me the points for playing my sport and taking all the hits on the filed.

Actually they should change the Fitness & Nutrition forum into a Sports & Fitness forum. It would be a lot easier.

Anways, can't wait for the season to start up. Not big on the NFL though, it's all about college ball.

I heard the name football was changed from pigskin after people started whining about the name. The people who changed the name thought football sonded cool regardless that it was already the name of a different sport and then made up the name soccer. What the hell does soccer mean anyways? Why can't they change football to soccer and have soccer go back to what it really is, that being football.

I'm not much of a football fan for two reasons. To much standing around watching the clock tick and they only play once a week. Hockey is the king of sports :iceslolan It has the best parts of all other sports. Hard hitting, high skill level, constant action, players want to play no matter how hurt they are, ONE time out per game, fortunes change in a second and they'll play more then once a week while doing all that.

There are other sports that I enjoy more then football, but there are quite a few people who do go nuts over it. In general, my opinion of football players is that most are sissy girlymen. Lace up the skates and be a real man :loser:

I can take a hit from a 300 pounder...once. And I don't know how much guts I have for running up and down a soccer field as compared to getting crushed every 2 minutes. :banghead: The one thing the football and soccer players did have in common (in high school and college)...we both got alot of action. And isnt THAT what's really important?

I think that "SOCCER" was actually the name of an association that dealt with "Football" (And I mean they kind where they use their feet) and generally for some reason on the western side of the Atlantic, people refered to the game as Soccer. When I was in england somebody explained it, but I don't remember what they said barely at all.

ur damn right rsx s777!! we do get the most action ;) those jealous bastards haha lol

Here is the simple explanation...

The game with the round ball was/is officiated in England by the Football Association - hence it was Association Football.

Later, a running game carrying the ball came into being - supposedly according to folklore when a certain William Webb Ellis picked up the ball and ran with it. Webb Ellis was a student at Rugby College and the game became Rugby (and the ball morphed into something oval).

Now along the way, Rugby split in two. The game in the South of England was very much a game played by upper class private boarding school educated 'gentlemen' (who stayed strictly amateur ie they were gentlemen and would not stoop to play for money but for the enjoyment of the game).

However, the miners and factory workers in the North of England did not have the luxury of high playing jobs or family money and broke away to form their own code.

The Southern Gents formed the Rugby Union which stayed fiercely non-professional into the early 90s and kept a 15 player code - whereas the Northerners formed the rival Rugby League using a 13 player code.

It's probable that the precursor to American or for that matter Canadian Football was derived from Rugby (possibly before the Union/League split).

The game Nort' Mercians call Soccer is called Football most places and is managed by FIFA which loosely translated is the International Federation of Football Associations. I figure that 190 countries can't be wrong...

i love football :) it lets you take your aggression out, and if you think that football players shouldnt wear pads, you should visit a football teams practice. and im only 12! football practices are probably the most difficult thing ive ever done, and i really dont know where football players would be without pads. this sounds crazy, but im not too big of a helmet fan though. most of the cuts, welts and bruises we get are from somebody (incorrectly) ramming you with their helmet when they tackle you. other than that, pads are reeeeeeally valuable.

football is really only cool to watch if you have some kind of personal conneciton with teh team. for instance, i loved watching my highschool friends play ball, but i can't really stand the NFL. UT longhorns aren't that great, but the games are still a blast to go to because the people support them hardcore. That's really freakin awesome. however, being an automotive forum and all, i believe the greatest sport ever is car racing. none of that sissy nascar stuff, ovals are easy to drive on. if i ever watch a nascar race, it's the first 5 laps, and the last 5. nothing really happens in between anyways. I love watching races like Le Mans, Formula one, Gran Turismo, anything that involves a track with more than just left turns. Back in the day when speed was not owned by Fox, they showed some awesome local British races, and since they weren't very officially regulated, it was almost a destruction derby! good times.
