ok so aside from the obvious mods to gain hp ,underdrive pulleys, cam gears and the such... what can someone with an RS with say an intake and exhaust work do to seriously upgrade HP besides spending 1000's of dollars on turbos and superchargers?mainly i wanna know cant i just drop a NOS tank in and be done with it? theyre not exactly all that expensive anymore...

Yea, I guess you could put nitrous in it. You probably won't get much respect from other people out there since all you have for power is nitrous. Also, I'm really not sure if the stock 420A engine can handle more than like a 25 shot of n2o. I think if you did a few internal upgrades like rods, pistons, etc, it might be a little safer to run more nitrous in it. Not to mention, you should upgrade your fuel system since you'll be running lots more air.
P.M. EclipseRST and ask him about it. I know you said you don't want to turbo your car, but I'm positive he can offer any information you could possibly want about your N/T eclipse =) Good luck bud.

Well you can always use nitrous, but I don't think they recommend anything over a 50 shot on stock internals.
But it seems the 420a on the RS/GS is restricted by lack of incoming oxygen. So if you bore out the intake manifold, with the throttle boby you should see some good improvement. Then of course if you can bore out the cylinder heads a bit for cheap, you'll see even larger gains. But doing that to the engine may require to upgrade the fuel system some.

ok i was always wondering about all this boring out and "port polishing as well" it seems almost like someone with a dremel tool and some free time can make an engine kick ass....whats the deal with it?

It would take you arediculous number of hours using a dremel tool. Boring is not by hand, it is done by a machine. Porting is done by hand and should be done using a die grinder and the appropriate bits. It takes a lot of careful work and ideally with a flowbench so you can measure the actual gains. Going in there with a bit and taking chunks out of the intake passages of the head does not always yield gains; rather poor planning can make air flow worse.

nitrous is the cheapest mod for the amount of power it gives you... heres what you need and you can run nitrous all day, everyday if you want and it wont hurt your car one bit:
1. S-AFC
2. Injectors 450cc (stock from a GST or GSX)
3. Fuel Pump (stock from a GST or GSX)
4. 75 shot Wet kit (dont use dry unless you wanna replace your piston rings within a year) wet is much safer and more power producing!
there ya have it, that will get you to about the stock or very lightly modded GST stages! somewhere in the low 15's very high 14's if tuned very well and you are a excellent driver!!! for all that you are looking at around $8-900!

well damn i guess im going to try my original plan to find a cheap turbo awd that was hit from behind lol...
EclipseRST
05-02-2004, 10:15 AM
thats an excellent plan, although there are not a lot of them out there! i have been looking for a nice GSX with a bad motor for awhile now and i cant seem to find them the way i want them... i'm kinda picky but thats me... if your not picky i'm sure you'll find one!

yeah i was just thinking damn how hard could it really be to make up the what 70hp diffrence in the N/t v turbo. underdrive pulleys giving what close to 30-40 hp..thats halfway. and freeing up the intake exhaust..giving what 10-20 hp. whod have thought i need nos. oh well i wanted a turbo anyways...too bad this engine kinda sucks it would be nice to have a BOV sound that you cant get with the 4g63..no offense to beiing a gearhead...but you really gotta love that sound, if you dont your crazy...hehe

05-02-2004, 10:57 AM
lol actually almost all of them have bad motors... thats why you dont see them, + who would give one away??? I would not sell a awd, I would keep it for my son if possible :D
the BOV + O2 dump... hrrr I cant live without the sound....
underdrive pulleys give you close 30-40 hp??? that would be the cheapest mod then... so I would say... "NO WAY"
and with freeing up you mean port it? If yrs than ... good luck porting...

yea 30-40hp from the pullies is a little much... i would say 15hp at the most!

im just quoting the adds i obviously dont have a dyno or anything to test the pulleys out on
EclipseRST
05-02-2004, 11:08 AM
ok well i have just never heard of a underdrive pully giving you that much HP... if its true then shit i am buying one today! lol 30-40hp is a lot for the price of that pully!
Tomeek
05-02-2004, 11:29 AM
well why would you go with nos, if you could get your 35hp shot from that pulley... always :D

ok open any spocom/import tuner/modified mag and goto the summit mini catalog area...read the add for the underdrive pulleys

37hp to the wheels my ass! $309.95 damn! i dont know how the hell they can get that out of just a pully set!
EVOclipse
05-02-2004, 11:43 AM
yeah sorry for my mistake, shouldnt that be illegal or something? hehe next inventiion.....cf pulleys woo maybe then you can make that figure
Tomeek
05-02-2004, 11:44 AM
lol maybe the pully has its own engine :D
EclipseRST
05-02-2004, 11:45 AM
well you didnt make a mistake thats what it says in the magazine... although i am still kinda skeptical! but if its true thats still pretty cheap for and additional 37whp

^^^^^^ well if you get a lighter camshaft and balance shaft removed...+ that pully, then YES... but otherwise... Nope, the pully can't do that much, since it is just a little weight reduction

05-02-2004, 12:04 PM
Hey does the mag have a part number for the pully.
EclipseRST
05-02-2004, 12:09 PM
nope do not see one... its just an Unorthodox Racing underdrive pully set for $309.95!!! ad it states "Adds up to 37WHP"

05-02-2004, 12:11 PM

Tomeek
05-02-2004, 02:04 PM
25hp... thats nothing... if you put a tf&tf sticker on an old civic hatch... you'll get like 300whp... well at least you will feel like that... until you turn your car on...

underdrive pulleys give more hp because they reduce the drag on the engine from whatever you put them on a/c, ps, water pump, etc. they're designed to spin the ac or whatever at a slower speed so that it doesnt take as much power from the engine
however 37hp is still a pretty unbelievable gain unless your talking about a complete set of pulleys for everything and maybe removing the ac then its possible. but ads always exagerate anyway

I guess. that is probably the main reason why I can't find a good eclipse or talon. Alot of people are like yeah I want an eclipse now. Now I am mad at my bro for selling his a few years back. I've always liked the car. Ever since the first gen. :2cents:
